It was our first annual Mother’s Day Beach Weekend in Arch Cape & I found this Cannon Beach place via Facebook. I recommended it to our group and they agreed. The location was not on the main street but was located near the oversized/overflow RV parking area. This was not originally what it looked like - it had been destroyed and was rebuilt - with the assistance of the town community - quite quickly (4 months or so). There was “9” of us. It was a beautiful day but still chilly to eat outside (which they had plenty of tables to accommodate). They had t large table that fit us all. We ordered mainly fish & Chips (salmon, cod & halibut), fish tacos & clam chowder. The pieces of fish were just the right combination of crispy & hearty (splitting of a 4 piece was a great idea since it couldn’t be eaten on its own). The fish & chip for kids was a great deal & was ordered by my aunt (she asked if she could order off kids menu because she eats smaller portions and was told she could). The clam chowder (there were 3 options - I chose the $7 option & it was great for sharing) was thick but had a gritty potato flavor to it - clam pieces were tiny but plentiful. The garlic bread ($3 for 2 pieces) was Texas toast style - so good. Shrimp (Prawn - about 6-8 pieces) cocktail was $7.95 - a little spendy but hey I was on vacation. The prawns were cold and big - especially with lemon drizzle & being dipped in cocktail sauce. I’ve never done an “oyster shooter “ before. They were large & ordered them with just a lemon. They had cocktail sauce but ended up squeezing the lemon onto it with splash of Tabasco sauce. I’ve heard & seen horror stories but it wasn’t that bad. We got our food quickly, great quality, well priced (Cannon Beach can be pricy compared to other cities in Oregon Coast) & so many options. I highly recommend this place & will visit again when in...
Read moreFive stars for Ecola Seafood, a humble cathedral of fried sea life tucked into Cannon Beach. We arrived on a Monday with six stomachs and just as many appetites. The line was moderate, but the staff was brisk and bright-eyed. Though they offered QR codes for ordering like some silicon valley lobster shack, we went analog and talked to a human being. Imagine that. The counterperson gave us a placard with a number and a mission. Sit. Wait. Listen for your number to be called.
Outside, we found a table with a gas fire pit in the center that glowed like the heart of a good decision. It was chilly in the shade with a breeze that smelled of salt and maybe stories, but that fire warmed us right up. Within ten minutes our number was called. Salvation comes fast sometimes.
I had the halibut fish and chips. The fish was as light as truth and flaked into pieces with the gentlest nudge. The batter was crisp without being greasy. You could write sonnets about the texture alone. Alongside it came a cup of clam chowder that was everything it needed to be and more. Rich. Substantial. Comforting.
I drank a can of local dry apple cider that snapped and sparkled and wiped the palate clean like a custodian who loves his work. A friend beside me ordered the Captain's Feast and donated her oyster to my cause. That oyster, my friend, was perfect. Briny, slippery, defiant. It tasted like it remembered the sea, which it probably did as it was likely there yesterday.
Everyone in our party left happy. The vibes here are unpretentious and sincere. A place where nothing is trying too hard and everything is simply done well. If more of the world were like Ecola Seafood, there might be less need for conflict.
Go. Eat. Sit by the fire or venture upstairs and soak in the view. Wait for...
Read moreWhen we visited last year our pick-up order was made early and by the time we picked it up, also early, it was cold and mushy. When I included this information in my review I recieved a reply lecturing me on how I can work around the system to prevent the problem in the future. We stayed away from the restaurant until a few days ago. We ordered a very expensive pick-up order for a specific time. When we arrived five minutes early our order was not ready and they had no idea why we were there. After showing them the confirmation email for the fifth time we got some excuse about the order not printing out and we could stay there and wait. After waiting a reasonable amount of time we were finally given our meal and we brought it home to eat. I had ordered a four piece halibut fish and chips and upon starting the second piece of fish I noticed it was salmon. I checked the other two pieces and one was halibut and the other salmon. There is a very big price difference between salmon and halibut. My wife's meal, also halibut, was made correctly. We were leaving the next morning and did not have time to stand in line to request a refund. From my experience this is the kind of detail and quality you can expect from this restaurant. The food is good when done right, but it is difficult to get them to do it right. We paid $130 for a pick-up meal for two people and we expect to get what we order and on time. We won't give them a third chance, it's too expensive and not worth the effort. We doubt we'll be missed, there were so many people there that we had to stand to wait for our meal, so other customers must be happy with the service. I'm looking forward to the reply telling me how this was all my fault and how I can prevent...
