I have been a patron of this establishment for over a year. Every Tuesday, give or take, I came in and Cameron who is one of the kindest souls I ever met, made my sandwich, with such care and consideration for my food allergy and never made me feel weird for being different. My order always also contained 2 salt bagels and sometimes even a pastry or two. After all, its not fun having an allergy and it can be daunting to be so careful about where you go to eat because you donât want to risk having to use you EpiPen or even worse, dying. I always came in shortly after the place opened to ensure the risk was way less as there would be less Sesame flying around and the workers would not have to do too much to be careful. Cameron established a trust with me and because of his kindness and care for my wellbeing, I was a consistent and very grateful customer. That is until today. This morning, Cameron was not there. I was not worried because another guy who has seen Cameron make my order knew exactly what to do. There was an older guy at the grill, who started to put the egg and bacon on the grill after the young guy told him about my sesame allergy. I asked if that was for me, and he said yes. It was a little later than I would have normally been there (about 6:25am) so I was not sure what the grill had been used for yet. Erring on the side of caution, I said, âthey normally clean off the grillâŚâ but before I could finish my sentence, he bellowedâ The Grill is cleanâ. Although I was taken back by his tone, I was ok , but when I saw that he did not change his gloves after he knew I had a sesame allergy, I said, â You know what, Iâm going to pass this week. â I figured I would get my two salt bagels and return next Tuesday. But, with such contempt in his voice, the older guy, âsaid, âok, have a nice day, shaking his head.â I said, âWOW, so rudeâ and that must have set him off. Instead of apologizing for speaking to a customer that way, he said something like, Thatâs not rude, the grill is perfectly clean and then what came next was just unbelievable. He said (as he yelled over the counter for all the customers to hear), â What do you think, your special?â Until then, I would not have wasted my time writing this review. I may not have returned, but I would not have written the review. However , for a man to yell at a woman like that and have no regard for me as a person or customer , was unacceptable, to me anyway. And he also managed to throw a whole year plus of kindness, appreciation, and TRUST right out the window. As I walked out, I mentioned how rude that was again and the people sitting down eating shook their heads , I could tell in disbelief, of what they had just witnessed. Listen, I am a native New Yorker, born and raised. These bagels are the best and do taste like the closest thing you would ever get to a breakfast sandwich in the city. That is why I drove out of my way every Tuesday to go there and referred tons of people there! But even the taste of a bagel is not enough to allow someone to disrespect me. Iâm sure this business will not miss my Tuesday morning orders, because their food is so good and everybody (guy on the grill not so much) is very kind and sweet. But I will pray for this guy and hope that this interaction will never happen to another woman or person again. Truly, I just hope he was having a bad day and he is sorry for the way he spoke to me. I have still given this place 4 stars because this is really the first REALLY negative encounter, and I am an honest person. I just wanted to share my story and say THANKS to Cameron for making it possible for me to feel like I was back home every Tuesday while I enjoyed my bagels. YOU will be missed. And please, for anyone working in the food service industry, please understand that people with allergies are just trying to enjoy life and FOOD like everyone else. I promise, we are not trying to make it harder for you and if you feel bothered or inconvenienced by us, I apologize on...
Read moreIt takes either really good service, or really bad service for me to write a Google Review. Looking at the rating, you can see where this is going... I had been visiting NYBD since I moved to the area in 2015, and would typically visit them 5-6x per month either for a quick breakfast sandwich, lunch, or bagels for my family over the weekend. Recently their food has become more and more overpriced ($7-8 for a BEC on a hard roll), but that is only a part of this.
Issue 1-2: Since I work around the corner, I usually call an order in and go pick it up a few minutes later. Over the last 3-4 months I have called to place an order (like I have done for years) and they consistently have some reason why they are unable to take a small order over the phone. I have gotten the "we're just too busy right now", "there is no line so it should be quick" and this morning I received the "we're short-handed" response, and that was the last straw.
I had worked in numerous Restaurants and Deli's growing up in CT. I would have been fired on the spot for saying that to a Customer. You can give an ETA of 30-40 minutes, which is long, but understandable when busy. Last month (November 2022), I used my entire lunch break waiting in line, just to have my order messed up. Now I've been on the other side of that so it wasn't the end of the world, but due to the wait and inability to call an order in, I just had to let them know it was wrong, and rush back to work. They didn't even offer anything to make up for their mistake on an $18 sub.
Issue 3: Phone orders. If people are unable to take a Bacon, Egg and Cheese order over the phone, they should not be in that line of work. Short-handed or not, there is no excuse for service that bad over such a long period of time. You should disconnect your phone, because it doesn't seem that it is used to conduct business.
Because of the service I have received, or not received over the last few months, I will no longer be visiting NYBD. I have found another bagel shop / bakery that does breakfast and lunch, is cheaper, accepts orders over the phone or online, and has phenomenal food.
You have officially lost a good Customer and I recommend others to do the same. I know I will be telling people I do business with to...
Read moreI had a very unpleasant experience today at this bagel shop, I normally shop here regularly with no problems without a face mask since the beginning of this pandemic but today was different.
I want to share this with others in hopes they can avoid such aggressive unreasonable customer service.
There was a line outside about 15 minutes to wait before entering, I get to the front of the line and noticed a sign âmask requiredâ so I call explain Iâm âmedical exemptâ from face mask mandate, and would they take my order and bring it outside so I could avoid entering their place of business without a mask, remind you â medical exemptâ individuals means âmasksâ will cause more harm to that persons health and should not be worn.
Anyway, the female manager on duty stated a mask must be worn in their business and it would be 30 more minutes before they can serve me. That would be 45 minutes all together, she was unwilling to help a customer service quickly outside with these restrictions.
What is a paying customer to do, I walk in and another employee takes my order, payment and quickly gets my order together, while standing there waiting less than 5 minutes, this manager and another employee starts to scream at me, other customers are trying to help me, help her understand the âmedical exemption â but nothing mattered, it was her way and she let me have it, very rude disrespectful employee, not only did she influence my decision not to return but other customers as well.
Iâve decided that I no longer need to take my business here, and give my hard earned money to this business again.
Big business understanding not everyone can wear a mask and medical exemptions are in place in mandate. Some small businesses are failing to understand those people still deserve respect, reasoning, and kindness that CAN NOT wear...
