Beautiful sunny days make it a great time to drive through the Columbia Gorge. My husband and I usually start on the Washington side, taking Highway 14 east through Vancouver and Camas on the way to Skamania. It's such a beautiful view! We cross over the Bridge of the Gods to the Oregon side and circle back via I-84. As many times as we have done this, we had never stopped at East Wind!
Recently I read an article about places to eat in the Gorge, so made sure to add this to our list. We decided to take a drive on one of the first nice days this month and figured this would be a great opportunity.
They are now taking walk-up orders again but we got in the drive through line, behind about 10-15 cars. It seemed to move pretty fast so we didn't mind waiting a bit. We checked out the scenery and enjoyed the gorgeous day. I ordered a vanilla/chocolate twist cone, one of my favorite things! (Growing up, we often got these at the Hazel Dell Steakburger Since they closed a few years ago, these have been missing in my life.) I shared the ice cream with my husband and I also ordered a cheeseburger and some tater tots. The husband ordered a peach Italian soda, corn dog and a cheeseburger.
We were given the ice cream cone and soda immediately and had to pull behind the building into the pick-up zone to wait for the rest of our food. After only about 5 minutes, the rest of our stuff was brought to our car. The drive-in doesn't have a place to park and eat so we drove half a mile to the marina and watched some people fish. The ice cream was perfect and made me feel like a kid again. The soda was SOOOOOO good! I had never had a peach soda before and it was so refreshing! The corndog had a great fry and a crisp on the outside but the hotdog itself was just barely warm. The tots suffered the same issue. My husband thought the cheeseburger was OK, but I had only two bites of mine. The meat was very plain and had no seasoning. I'm pretty sure it was one of those frozen patties that you can buy in bulk. NOT tasty at all.
I'd be more than happy to come back but will only get the ice cream and drinks. Keep me away from...
Read moreSo me and my other half were lucky enough to stumble upon this place because we missed our turn. I am really happy we did. Decided to stop and grab a snack after exploring some of the waterfalls in the area. Plus I really love places like this as well have very few left where I am from. First thing I noticed was the cool old sign. Then we saw the line out front and more than a few people enjoying the ice cream cones. We ordered the bacon cheese burger and the large curly fries and medium blackberry shake. The blackberry shake was recommended by the employee that took our order. She told us that it was made from local seasonal berry from that area so I was like that sounds exactly what we wanted. Our order came out really fast and they were fairly busy at the time. I definetly would stop by here again as the burger was a very good size and packed with meat and fresh veggies on a soft bun. The fries were huge and they were cooked to perfection. way better than any corporate clown could make them. Now let’s talk about the blackberry shake. Yes it is that good. The soft serve cones also looked really good but I enjoyed the blackberry shake. Definitely stop by if you are hungry and out in the area. You wont be...
Read moreA solid burger stop in a charming village off of Highway 84. I recommend Eastwind Drive-In for anyone looking for a classic burger, fries, and shake. Pretty quick despite being very busy, and decently priced.
Sides were decent. We had fries and tots. Fries are very similar to McDonald's. Make sure to ask for fry sauce, it's extra and they don't really offer it.
Excellent shakes. Thick and creamy, and doesn't use too much flavoring. My 3 year old and I enjoyed them immensely!
Pretty solid corn dogs. Fried well.
The burgers were quality, with pretty good veggies, standard beef patty with melted American cheese. Good onions. But where Eastwind shines is their bacon! Thick bacon cooked just past the point of chewy without going over into crispy. Heaped on with a few huge slices, the bacon was the stand out star of the Eastwind Drive-In.
We had been eying Cascade Locks and Eastwind Drive-In for a while, passing the town on 84 several times. I'm very glad we made the stop and knocked Cascade Locks off of #thegreatoregonburgerbucketlist. The town is charming and beautiful. Definitely worth a quick detour the next time you're...
