I drive 20 minutes to eat at Nana’s Kitchen. The food is exceptional, the ladies there are always SO sweet and so grateful for the support, and that’s what keeps me coming back here. Today, I stopped to get some of their cornbread (because it is so so good and my little girl is obsessed with it!) and I had an experience that was pretty off-putting. When I walked up to the counter, I asked the young gal how many cornbreads they were able to give me - Since the pieces are pretty small, I was hoping to get 12 of them, but I also didn’t want to be rude by asking for too many. She was very kind to me and went back and checked. She said they could give me the last 10 they had, so I said yes and I paid for 10, plus a 20% tip, while she wrapped them up. Right when she was about to hand them to me this guy (who apparently was the owner, never seen him before) walks out and tells me that no, I can’t have them all. I can only have 5. I told him I had already paid for them and he continued to tell me that it wasn’t possible. I asked him what the reasoning for that was, and he explained that he wanted to save the other 5 for possible customers that would come after me, which was precisely why I asked beforehand how many I could have. It was already 2 hours to close, so I said if no one buys those are they just going to put in the trash, even though I’m willing to pay you for them now? We exchanged a few more words and I felt like he was a bit confrontational with me, and he ultimately still refused to sell them to me. He refunded me for the price of 5 pieces, he kept the payment for the other 5, as well as my 20% tip. Idk, was honestly not that big of a deal until he started get rude about it. Like I said, I drive really far to support this business, I have brought others with me and have told several people about it, and I tip really well and come fairly often. Even despite all of that, if I were the owner I would have handled that situation much differently.. sad. Cornbread was...
Read moreWell besides the obvious roach problem that they have as you can see in the picture I've had multiple problems over the numerous times that I have came in, most being with the food. Came in a while back and ordered two entrees and and a dessert, these kids made the dessert which was a funnel cake first and brought it out with ice cream on top well before our food. I'm not sure why they did that, when we actually got around to finishing the food the funnel cake was soggy and also did not come with whip cream although she has that stated on the menu 🤔 Came in another time and ordered food and an Oreo cheesecake that was clearly expired and needed to be thrown out on top of being extremely tiny so I see that they don't keep track of when certain foods need to be thrown out. There was a layer of gunk in the cheesecake and liquid... Expired. I also came in another time and ordered a strawberry cake which was stale, so I know they are not making fresh desserts as often as they should, more like just keeping them until they sell. I know the cake was refrigerated because it was cold, but even being refrigerated it shouldn't have been hard and dried out. They got ROACHES and when the employees were informed for the second time they took about 5-10 mins to even come out to look. The prices they have shown are not always the same prices that it rings up as so make sure your paying attention because the employees could care less to charge you more than the prices that are on the menu, it's happened to me twice now and I'm glad that I was paying attention.
This place has a good concept but as far as business operations go, you could use...
Read moreOn arrival, I saw it was a local business with a at home feel. Atmosphere was filled with R&B amd old school. I was already sold that the food was going to be great because the floor was sticky and it had looked like it was just mopped. IYKYK. I put my order as nanas soul w/ the fried chicken and lemonade. Even spoiled myself by getting the strawberry shortcake funnel cake. Takes about 10 minutes for everything to get out. The "busin" beans were mediocre at best. They used waaayy too much open pit and baby rays. Seems like they threw a hit of paprika to mask a bit of it but didn't work. Matter of fact, everything they gave me (Mac and cheese, chicken, and greens) had 1 too many shakes of paprika. The collard greens needed to be cooked 7-12 minutes longer to be right there. The Mac and cheese was the second best thing besides the chicken that needed a sauce. Mac and cheese had most of the right components but was over taken by the chicken bouyan they used. The worst thing given to me was the strawberry short cake funnel cake. The whole funnel cake was over cooked so breaking it apart was not easy with a fork. Also, it wasn't a fresh one it seemed to be one that was already prepared and sitting for awhile. I asked for a refund and I'm glad they understood and gave me one back for the dessert. Overall it's a 2.8 experience so round up to an even 3. Definitely come by for some basic soul food if this is the closest to you, but not by any means to go out...
