I've been a customer at this location since 2016. This is probably my fifth or sixth disappointing dining experience at this location.
We decided to stop on our way to Winefest and we left in plenty on time knowing that they'd probably be busy due to Winefest. We waited for 30 minutes for a table. That was expected and not a problem. Once we were seated, we waited a long time for our drink orders to be taken. Again, this could be understood if the restaurant was busy. Most of the tables were unoccupied. We finally ordered. Our server disappeared and no one checked on us, including not even to refresh our drinks, until our food arrived over an hour later. Again, half the restaurant was empty. The servers were gathered together in a big group laughing and chatting. We never received refills nor a word about the kitchen being so behind. My husband ran out of coffee. We were there so long, every ice cube melted in my drink and there was never an opportunity to ask for a refill or fresh drink. Our food arrived over an hour later. Someone, not our original server, left the food without a word or asking if we needed anything else. I went behind the server stand myself to get condiments we needed. No one else spoke to us until they brought the check.
We really want to support businesses in University City. We've been more forgiving towards this location because of that. The last time we were there, I had to get up and ask for our check after waiting an hour since we were again abandoned by a server. We're at the point where we just drive across town to eat brunch rather than continue to be disappointed at Famous Toastery. For awhile now, it's been evident that the customer service there is in need of a major overhaul. We hope that they're able to turn it around as that neighborhood deserves an excellent...
Read moreThe best thing about Famous Toastery is it's location! It's right on the Boardwalk of Shoppes at University Place. Which is slap in the heart of University City. I enjoy coming here with friends and family anytime I'm in the Charlotte area because they are fast, friendly and easy on the wallet!
They've obviously had to adjust for COVID-19 but that's all for safety reasons. This does increase your wait-time significantly during peak times but DON'T WORRY they usually use Yelp's waitlist system so checking in and keeping track is as easy as can be! Always call and check with the host to see if they are using the waitlist because you never know.
They have a great drink selection for brunch and I highly recommend the Mimosa's or even the Rumosa MMMMmm. The orange juice they use is freshly squeezed in-house. It's worth it so I'd recommend coming with a good appetite and palate. Another favorite of mine are those Biscuits and Gravy. Lawd I try and get something different each time but I cannot get enough. The gravy and those biscuits are really something else. Add some eggs and their stone-ground grits and you've got yourself a pretty good meal there.
Most important take-away is Famous Toastery in University is a GREAT pick for breakfast, brunch or lunch. It's easy to find and I've had great friendly service on every visit here. They have a large menu with something for everyone. Gluten-free and gluten-sensitive items are offered as well. Just wish they were open later as I like to eat breakfast late. I'd love to see one open up near Greensboro but I see they have one in Winston-Salem I'll...
Read moreFor ALL THE POTATOE LOVERS... I love the potatoes they have here. The taste and flavor are totally different from the other locations. I just request for them to be cooked a little longer 😉 The food is also great. I recommend that if you're with a large party, ask for your food to come out as it's done. That's if you don't want any cold food. I think the water view is so serene. Especially if you get a spot in the litter sun-room. (Not sure if that's what they call it, but I'm calling it that 🤣🤣) My waitress(Briana) wasn't on point. She actually went to another table to greet them as soon as they came in before me. They came in about 8-10 minutes after meIt was only one of me. I forgot to order eggs (my fault) and had ordered them after my meal arrived. She put my order in but returned to my table after I was over half way through my meal to ask, "They haven't brought your eggs out yet?" I'm thinking Ummm no, i thought you were my server 🤔 Well anywho, I give her grace since u should have had my complete order ready at jump 🤣 Be mindful you have to walk up to the bar to lay your tab. I guess if you sit at the high tables, you get special privilege & they will take your payment for you. I saw them do it for a couple sitting at the high tables. I was sitting at a smaller table by the door. Overall food taste MUCH better than all of the other locations I've been. (Concord, Park Road) * Edit- just as I finished this post a young lady came & picked up my tab. I guess she was like you got to get up out of here we about...
