We were a family of 4 adults, 2 teens, a toddler and newborn. We visited around 4pm, to try and avoid crowds.
The restaurant had great light fixtures, with an overall pleasing look. It is quite dark, almost too dark to see the menu well. If you need more light, ask to be seated under the lights. Our adults were between 29 and 60, we all struggled to some degree. The menu is varied, without there being too much variety.
Overall the food was quite good. The salad I was told was fresh and tasty, the salmon went down well. Thise who had steak all sajd it was seasoned well, but, there were various observations of it bwing a touch on the chewy side and the meat (excluding seasoning) being a bit bland. As a family with a penchant for blue steak, we opted for rare as none of us had visited before. Our preference is for smooth, almost buttery steak. The chicken was again, very well seasoned, though slightjy overcooked as the breast was dry. The side dishes were lroclaimed good (macaroni) and good but way, way too much (smashed potatoes and fries). We were surprised at the complete lack of vegetables. I nearly ordered rhe brocolli, but didn't as I assumed some would come with the chicken. To me, a meal isn't half a chicken and a huge lump of potatoes. I was wrong, which is my error for not checking. However, it seems odd that the whole menu had very little in the way of vegetables, salad aside. Dessert was key lime pie or chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was quite good, melted in the mouth, but got a strange taste as more was eaten. I think baking soda, but I wouldn't be sure. The key lime pie was a beautiful mix of tangy, creamy filling and a cinnamon crumb crust.
Service was okay overall. It took a while for us to be settled with one server. The woman who seated us seemed pleasant, though only provided 3 menus for our group, and assured us she would get a booster. Another woman came over and asked of we wanted a booster, we said yes (as the other woman had moved on to do something else). She returned with a highchair, we asked again for a booster and she removed the highchair and eventually came back with the booster. She then asked us if we wanted to order drinks, which we did. Not long after, we had another server ask us if we wanted drinks, we assured him we had ordered. Our drinks came and we fot asked bh to et another server if we were ready to order. We qere not. A few minutes later a different server returned and asked the same thing. We asked him for a few more minutes, he returned and remained our server for the rest of the meal. Water however was topped up by whomever was passing. The final server we had was very pleasant and patient, communicating well with children and adults alike. His smile was permanent, but came across as very genuine. He neither pushed dessert, nor the bull on us. Allowing us to move on in our own time.
Overall, the food was generally tasty though lacking in nutritional variety. Price wise, it was okay, pricier than the quality of food but not by enough to make me not want to return. Service was good,...
Read moreWow I had such a great time at this restaurant! I went to Chattanooga for a night and I made reservations for Saturday through my Yelp app based on the high ratings they received. We showed up and were seated shortly after we arrived.
When we sat down we were greeted by a pleasant gentleman whose name escapes me. He gave us great suggestions on what to eat. As an appetizer we had the spinach and artichoke deep. It was super tasty and flavorful. Definitely an enjoyable experience. The chips were a little salty for my liking but my partner thought they were perfect. I ordered the City salad and it was the only thing I took a picture of because the setting was so dim and intimate that I didnt want to disturb people around me with the flash from my camera. Usually I dont really worry about that too much but I was trying to be classy and not ruin the mood LOL. The salad was sooo good. It came with romaine lettuce, bacon, blue cheese crumbles, eggs, croutons, and I beleive it was ranch dressing. I could have just stopped there but I ended up also getting the steak tacos (servers recommendation) with macoroni and cheese. Both of those things were very delicous as well. I couldnt even finish everything! My partner had the filet mignon and from what I heard, that was tender and flavorful as well.
Overall, we were very pleased with the food and the service we received. I dont think anything was overpriced either. The bill came out to about $90 with 2 drinks. Not bad for a nice night out on the town. One last thing I will say is i thought I would need to dress up to go in there but overall the ambiance (at least on a Saturday night at this location) was...
Read moreThis visit was a little disappointing as we had heard so many raving comments about the food and service. We arrived without reservations on Saturday at 1pm and were seated promptly. The table was on the upper level -- dark and uninviting. We requested to be moved to the lower level where it was brighter. However, it was so noisy that you couldn't have a normal-toned conversation without having to raise your voice. The service was mediocre. The waitress came to our table three times, asking if we were ready. She appeared annoyed, yet never made an attempt to make suggestions. We had eaten at another J. Alexander's before but the menu was different. I wanted a specific salad, similar to a Cobb salad without the bacon. The waitress was unfamiliar with what I was talking about. So, I asked if I could have a salad that was on their menu, and just add blue cheese and a sliced hard-boiled egg. The request was approved by the manager. My husband ordered an Ahi salad. When it arrived, it had FOUR minute pieces of tuna. It was seared but lacked seasonings. The dressing was some sort of balsamic vinegar. The portions were very small. The Ahi salad was closer to an appetizer size. I ran out of water twice and both times, I had to signal for a waiter/waitress to please refill my glass. The prices were a bit steep for lunch and the food was far from anything beyond mediocre. Because of this, we decided to skip the dessert menu. For the price, we would have been more delighted to have dined at the mediterranean place adjacent to J....
