The food here is consistently mediocre, but due to its location, reasonable prices, and late-night kitchen, I keep giving it a chance.
On this occasion, I happened to be among a dinner group of 15 people at 9 p.m. There were a handful of other diners present, and a few patrons at the bar. The waitress worked hard to fill our orders--no unusual requests--and the food arrived within a reasonable time for our size group. However, while we tried to be an easy group to serve, our waitress made little or no effort to be pleasant or considerate. I felt like I'd be asking for a great favor if I were to request a refill of my water glass. My friend, who had to catch a train, did not ask that his food be hurried because he didn't want to place any more pressure on the waitress. (He abandoned his dinner after a few bites because he ran out of time.)
Instead of looking to have the restaurant accommodate us, its customers, we found ourselves making compromises to accommodate the restaurant. Cardozo's, I was willing to give you another chance tonight. You convinced me to make...
Read moreI’ve visited this bar a few times for after-work happy hours. While I wasn’t blown away by the service, I didn’t expect much, considering it’s a dive bar in the Loop, and they often seem understaffed for the number of patrons. However, my most recent visit was particularly disappointing. I went to meet a former colleague and ended up running into a group of acquaintances. While catching up, one of the staff members approached me, yelling and being extremely rude and unprofessional about something I didn’t even understand. The way I was treated made me feel disrespected, so I decided to leave. A witness to the interaction also left and shared that they had been treated poorly by the staff on previous occasions as well. After reading other reviews, it seems this unprofessional behavior is a pattern at this bar. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this place to anyone who values being treated...
Read moreThe last of its kind in The Loop, this place is like having lunch (or dinner...or drinks) in the 1970’s. From daily specials written out by hand and xeroxed, to the waitresses taking orders with their two-pack-a-day growls, this place never fails to remind me of the days when lunch often meant a martini. I’ve always enjoyed their salads, which are bountiful and delicious, and their burgers, which are made with quality, tasty meat seasoned and cooked to perfection. The chili special is good, but then again, so are all the others.
Why 4 stars? I think their iced tea is too strong, and when iced tea is too strong, it tastes like Bactine. I want a beverage, not something to...
