If you need a city sticker, get to city hall before they open. I got there at 7:55 and was second in line. I was so glad I did because then I was helped by Barbara J, who is the singularly kindest city official I have ever had the good fortune to encounter. I just honestly explained my situation to her and she really did the best she could to help and for that, I am incredibly grateful.
I couldn't take off time from work so I asked my boyfriend if he could drive me there and drop me off so I could go right in, and also so I didn't have to find somewhere to park and/or pay to park in a garage, and then find my way back to city hall, and then find my way back to my car, and then try to get to work on time. He waited for me around the corner in the car with the hazard lights on so they couldn't give me a ticket while I was literally inside getting a sticker. If you have someone to do this for you, I think it's best option.
If you move to the city and have a car registered to your Chicago address, make sure you get a city sticker RIGHT AWAY, even if you park in a private two-car garage and don't even work in the city like I do, otherwise they will give you a $200 ticket which you will have to pay in addition to the cost of the sticker (~$80) + a $60 late fee + backcharges for the all months that you've been living there without a sticker. Seriously, just get it within your first month and try to get Barbara J at 8 am...
Read moreI went in to get my vehicle sticker/permit to park at my new apartment. I was told that I had to pay a fee for a wheel tax because I didn't have my car registered in the city when I had it here prior to having it at this new apartment. I had a parking spot included at my last apartment so I didn't need to park on the street. How was I supposed to know that I needed to have my car registered in the city and have a city sticker if I don't ever park in permit parking? Absolutely ridiculous. So, if I ever want to have my car registered in the city, I have to pay a late fee on top of the other fees and if I don't and just park in permit parking, they said I can get $200 fines. It's especially frustrating because on the phone they made it seem like it wasn't a big deal and then when they are "making conversation" with you and ask about if you just moved here, they are really probing to see if they can gauge you for more money. Rude...
Read moreI got a ticket for city sticker expired when I see that the rules say your renewal date is 6 months after plate sticker renewal date which mine should be September but I got a ticket in July because somebody who works for the city entered the wrong renewal month for me so I thought it was September but when I go to city hall to complain they verbally admit it is wrong but have not fixed it I did like the hearing judge said ask them to give me in letter form that this was a mistake in order for her to dismiss this $200 ticket but I’m told I can’t get a letter admitting a mistake was done nor has it been corrected. So what can I do ? Who can I talk to to help resolve my problem I don’t feel it’s fair for me to have to purchase a City sticker right after purchasing my plate sticker when the rules say 6 Months after nor do I feel I should get stuck with this $200 ticket thank God I didn’t get more tickets it is more than the $87...
