Since adopting a diet regimen involving tacos and “intermittent fasting” a year ago, breakfast has been a rarity. El Huevo Estrellado (“The Starred Egg” in English) is the kind of place that makes me re-evaluate the health vs. happiness dichotomy.
A small South Bay restaurant featuring warm, professional service and excellent home-style cooking, El Huevo Estrellado serves what may be San Diego’s loveliest “Chroizo Scramble” ($10.95). Every meaty strand of ground sausage was seemingly separately coated with a thin layer of egg clinging to it like a batter. This helped dull the harsh salinity and greasiness that one typically associates with Mexican chorizo. The result is a much cleaner-tasting amalgamation of egg and sausage than you’d expect. The rice and refried beans served with the scramble were also unique, with the rice infused with a touch more of tomato flavor than the familiar “combo plate” rice you get from other restaurants in and around San Diego; I enjoyed it.
Meals begin here with complimentary tortilla chips served with a piquant salsa roja that delivers a fresh burst of cold while incongruously punishing the inside of your mouth with its chili-induced heat.
El Huervo Estrellado’s tacos regrettably do not use hand-made tortillas made on-premises, but they are not using the usual horrible pre-packaged tortillas. The owner told me they get freshly-made tortillas from a nearby tortilleria each day. Their “Carnitas Taco” ($3.75) is a non-traditional carnitas taco, featuring chunks of juicy pork in a marinade with shredded yellow and white cheese, guacamole, chopped tomatoes, cilantro, and a little bit of lettuce.
A photo on the wall shows that President Bill Clinton once visited this archetype of a family-run Chula Vista Mexican restaurant, which made me wonder how he even found it. Regardless, I have no doubt his day was...

Today I ordered an omelette and huevos rancheros and both were as tasty as I remember. So glad they are back for dine-in (outside and takeout). Highly recommended.
OLDER REVIEW: We have tried to order at the restaurant during the pandemic with no success. There is a recording when dialing their phone number that says the number changed but doesn't say what that number is. Also noticed their "El Huevo Estrellado" signs have been removed and all windows are covered. I will be so sad if they are permanently closed. Hopefully this is only temporary.
OLDER REVIEW: 5 Stars *
My friend recommended this place not so long ago. My mom and I decided to give it a try and found that it is actually very good. We tried once a basic breakfast and another time a full lunch of carne asada. The location is hidden. I don't know how many times I have driven by without ever paying...
Read moreIt's hard to find good food and amazing customer service around this area. My oh My !! I asked my husband, is there any Mexican Restaurant her that makes delicious huevos rancheros (i'm a picky eater). Boy I tell you, the moment we walked in, the gentlemen there greeted us with warmth welcome. He was very very friendly and he made us feel at home. Sometimes, regardless of how great the food is, and if the customer service is awful, i will never go back. However, these guys had everything. Great food ( I mean tasty, delicious food) and a wonderful customer service to compliment everything.
We were spoiled and I was treated like a Queen... :) Guess what, I took my family the next day around 8:45pm and they close at 9pm. They stayed open and just for us. I love it here and I recommend this place for great food and beautiful people with awesome customer service.
Thank you and we will see you guys soon...
