I fell in love with Thai food at a little place called Bangkok on the outskirts of Chicagoland. And since that time, I've been on the search in Cincinnati for a tom kha gai soup that is anywhere near the creamy perfection as that place.
Thai Express is about as close as it gets. It's small, crowded and steamy, but if a flavor-filled Asian take out place is just what the doctor ordered and you want something quick, relatively inexpensive with good Thai flavor, then this is a great spot.
Do not expect high end. Again, this is quick, tasty, authentic takeout Thai food at a good price.
My favorites on the menu are the aforementioned tom kha gai soup. It's got a great, sweet, creamy taste with ample chicken and mushrooms. I like to ask for some more cilantro in mine- makes it Sooo good.
My girls like the Thai veggie spring rolls. They are crisp and just what you'd expect with a nice sweet sauce to dip.
We also like the massaman curry. It's a milder curry with potatoes. And of course, the chicken pad thai is a go to and they do it right. The rice is very sticky and isn't the greatest- just standard bed of rice. The drunken noodles are soooo good. Great flavor.
Be mindful that like any Thai place, they ask for spice levels. Anything past a 5 and you'll be sweating.
If quick, tasty, affordable Thai takeout is what your mood calls for, then this is your place. I give this place a one and a half (out of two) Yums Up!
Unfortunately, our order tonight was skimpy...basil chicken had 4 times the rice than chicken. Same with the chicken Pad Thai. Taste was still good so I'll keep it 5 stars, but this is the first time we felt shorted. I hope it's...
Read moreI have been to many Thai restaurants around the country after going to Thai express and been disappointed (but not California or New York where they might have a big Thai population.) There are two things here that I have found no equal to anywhere else:
Pad Thai - On their best days eating their pad thai must be what it is like to eat like royalty in Thailand. On their worst days the pad thai is still better than almost every other restaurant's or frozen pad thai dish I have tried. If you have had oily pad thai somewhere else and try this you will probably become just like me and just stop ordering pad thai at any other Thai restaurant because it is too heartbreaking to eat bad pad thai after eating at Thai Express.
Black Pepper Garlic Stir Fry - This is one of the most flavorful and wonderful dishes around once you get the spicy level right. I get this 2 levels lower than I get my pad thai because the black pepper adds significantly to the spicy level. This should be their signature dish because I have never really tasted anything quite like it anywhere else.
If you are just passing through and never plan to come back to Cincinnati, DO NOT EAT HERE because it will be too expensive to keep coming back just to go to...
Read moreI'm gonna say maybe it's cause we ordered take out but I suggested Thai Express because someone on Reddit said it was the best Thai food they'd had in Cincinnati. Buuuuuut idk - I got the soy sauce noodles and while the portion was admirable they tasted somewhat sour? Maybe idk wth soy sauce noodles are supposed to taste like but I was expecting more salt, less sour. My wife got the red curry and was disappointed with the flavor (wish I'd tried it tbh). They forgot our Rangoon's but I would LOVE to try those at some point cause shrimp and crab?? Ok!!! I'm in! Finally, we did get the chicken satay we ordered and it was good! I love a peanut sauce and theirs did not disappoint! Overall I will try this place again but I think I'll try dining in and see if the quality is different. Not that the ingredients were bad! On the contrary, they were excellent - the flavor is what got...
