Went to Quinn's this past Monday night to hear some live jazz music and get a bite to eat. I wasn't expecting much, ( I mean after all, it IS Beacon. NY and not lower Manhattan), but we were pleasantly surprised. It was this little splash of culture in the middle of a small town main street. The street was quiet, empty and well lit but not bright, so it gave me 1940's Berlin vibe. But maybe that's just me. Once inside the doors, you go through a heavy black curtain and your standing right next to a small stage, while in the immediate distance on the right, there are comfy booths and to the left a bar. It's not a big place, which I loved because it was this feeling of intimacy with everyone, even though it was enough space where no one was directly on top of one another. Their is an old fashioned (Retro?) ambiance about the decor. It is dated, but it seems to have been kept that way on purpose to accentuate the vibe. The best part was the demographic of the crowd. As a black woman I was concerned that a club in Beacon would be unwelcoming and I would stick out like a sore thumb.. but no. It was like the Village in NYC in there. Elders with canes, 20 and 30 somethings, a couple of kids under 12 walked past my table, 40 and 50 somethings, people of every color and shade, some people looked like they came straight from Woodstock and a few looked liked they worked on the farm all day or came straight from the office. It was truly a melting pot in there and everyone felt comfortable. No cover charge. No dress code (we wore jeans and converse sneakers). They have a nice list of drinks and can make non-alcoholic versions for those that don't drink alcohol (like me). Wonderful local live jazz band, with just the right amount of sound, so it wasn't too overwhelming while trying to eat and have a conversation with your date. The food and drinks were on POINT! Delicious Asian type food menu. Vegetarian and vegan options. I loved the fried Shrimp, Tofu, the curry Vegetable and rice and the Purple sweet potato fries. My husband couldn't stop eating and I want to go back just for some more of the food LOL. This place is well worth every penny and I think it's going to be our new date night spot. The staff was friendly and attentive. You have to check out this hidden gem with the "Juke Joint" vibes. I...
Read moreFor a place known for their ramen, it leaves a lot to be desired. My least favorite in the Hudson Valley. However, all of their other food items such as the purple potato fries, fried tofu, croquettes, steamed buns and desserts are wonderful. The atmosphere is almost like a good dive bar. They have a really nice selection of drinks, stuff a lot of other places on Main Street don’t carry. I’ve had a lot of variety in service too, a couple of bartenders who are welcoming, had a good chat or just let me to hang out til I needed something. There’s a couple of bartenders that are extremely standoffish and borderline rude, but seem to be overly friendly with who seem to be regulars or their friends. I dined in a few times, most notable was actually the first time I’ve dined in, the server threw the menus and utensils down onto the table, said ‘let me know if you need anything’, and walked off to talk to a different table. Another server took the order, and then was ignored when trying to pay and the other server had to get me my check while our original server chatted with and checked on other tables. Our original server actually didn’t even swing by to see how it was going the entire meal, which wouldn’t have been an issue if it wasn’t seemingly singled out. I’ve also sat at the bar with this particular server/bartender and was kinda glared at and made to feel unwelcome and as if I was wasting time. Same with the other particular bartender. I don’t like putting negativity out there based off of service because everyone has bad days, but every visit can’t coincidentally be a bad day. I’ve asked around, and actually have been told that these couple of bartenders are just kinda like that to random people. I would like to go to Quinns more but the vibe...
Read moreIf you don't know much about Japanese cuisine, than this is your spot. I've really wanted to like this place...
A.- Because it's the only ramen in town.
B.- The venue is cool.
C.- They have live music, and play movies on their projector screen.
I've wanted to like this place enough that I've been about 4 times now. Each time getting a different ramen, with only 3 choices, it shouldn't be too hard to get right.
First go at their ramen.. I had to send it back as it literally had Zero taste. And I mean Zero! They forgot to put the miso in the broth!? I got my bowl back, I guess a table spoon of miso paste was dumped in there and was then returned. (If you know anything about making ramen broth, you know it takes days to make)
My second and 3rd go around was better. But the broth is just lacking in that deep flavorful taste. But being the only ramen worth mentioning in and around Beacon, it's better than instant. (though not gonna lie, I make bomb instant noodles)
I also ordered their vegetarian curry with Karaage on the side. Have to admit, the karaage this time around was good. (First time I ordered it, didn't eat it. It was sent back due to it being over fried and beyond dried out and in dirty oil) 😕no thanks.
The curry had again.. No taste. Lacking. Had to ask for salt. (and I put in A lot of salt) You can't get Japanese curry lacking in taste, you make them with curry blocks for crying out loud. Not much to get wrong there!?
I did eat it though.. I was hungry!!!!
Finally, their wine. For whatever reason every time I've ordered white wine, whether it's Chardonnay, Sauv Blanc, or Pinot.. it's Never ever cold!? Unless you get it in a can...
Like I said, I want to like this place!! I just seem to leave disappointed every...
