When going to school at A&M, myself and my friends loved mess and were loyal and frequent customers. My partner especially loved it and since we moved away after graduation he has missed it dearly. We are driving for a road trip and decided to make a slight detour solely so that we could eat at our favorite breakfast/brunch place in cstat.
Due to it being winter break and hours change in cstat with students leaving I checked the website when we began our drive to ensure their closing time was still 3 PM. To double check, I called them at 12:16 PM and spoke to a girl on the phone who confirmed that they closed at 3 PM today and their hours have not changed for winter break. We arrived at 2:15 PM to people cleaning up and a sheet of printer paper taped on the door written in sharpie that their hours have changed due to winter break and their new closing time was 2 PM everyday. I noticed a worker sweeping outside and asked him about it and he said that it was decided today. I told him that I had called a couple of hours ago and was given the wrong information and he said that the decision was made after the time I called.
I find it very unprofessional given that I called ahead and checked beforehand. It leaves a very sour taste in my mouth and my partner was so upset that he said we might not ever go again due to this, but this was said in anger and we probably will still visit when we can. It makes me very sad and disappointed, because this was a staple for us when we were in school and the food is truly fantastic.
As someone who has previously worked in the service industry, I understand that things can change, but if I had gotten a call asking about our closing time and given a usual closing time I believe that should be taken into account for the rest of the day to avoid things like this happening and disappointing people.
I understand that we are all human and human errors happen. I have been there countless other times and honestly, every other time has been a 5/5. The food is amazing and the service is outstanding. We always get the chicken and waffles, the mac and cheese, the mess fries, and we try a new sweet waffle each time we go. It honestly speaks volumes that we have been there countless times before and this was our first bad encounter. Yes, there is a long wait most of the time, but honestly the food is so worth the wait. Plus, if you don’t want to wait, you can order online, park in the curbside spot, get your food brought to you, bring it home and, and it it there with little to no wait. Overall, yes, we were disappointed today, but based on past visits, we probably won’t be next time. Looking forward to our next visit, because we really miss our chicken...
Read moreADDENDUM: Second time to visit for breakfast. What a difference between our first visit and this one. I was impressed! All the positive comments in my previous visit still stands. As for negative comments - nonexistent during this visit! It was a very enjoyable experience of great food and service. The breakfast was hot, prepared just right, and full of flavor. If you haven't been to MESS Waffles, plan to go. You will not be disapointed. We plan to return soon.
First time to visit MESS and based on the reviews, I was expecting better. We arrived just prior to opening and waited along with other early arrivals. First, the positive. All staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome. They have two blends of coffee and you can expect great flavor from either one. One is slightly mild but still full of flavor. If you prefer bold, that's available too but not bitter. I tried both and was very pleased. I ordered the MESS Breakfast with bacon. Their website doesn't list it but pork or "real" bacon is one of their choices. The breakfast comes with scrambled eggs, waffle (with syrup on the side), and cubed potatoes with a delicious light crust. The potatoes were hot and excellently seasoned. The waffle also had good flavor but could have been served warmer. Seating is available indoors as well as out. Being new, you can expect a fresh, clean enviornment. Now for the negative: The scrambled eggs were way overdone, almost to the point of your La Quinta "free breakfast eggs". If you like your eggs soft to medium scrambled, be sure to inform them when ordering. Also, my eggs and my guest's eggs were served barely warm, not hot. Same with the waffle - only warm. Since the potatoes were the only hot item on the plate I suspect the waffle and eggs had to sit while the potatoes finished cooking. The eggs could also use some seasoning. If you like your bacon extra crisp, then you will be pleased. I wasn't but that's how it's prepared. Anything less, you you'll have to inform them when ordering. I'll know next time. Instead of salt/pepper at each table, there is a common area where only a couple of shakers sit and they were practically empty. Also, the napkin holder was empty. Something you wouldn't expect when the restaurant had only been open 5 minutes. MESS Waffles has great potential. It's not there yet but the food is good and I...
Read moreI always wanted to try this place so I went today with a friend. The atmosphere of the restaurant was really cute and clean and there was a good amount of seats both inside and out but the first thing I noticed was the staff were so nice and welcoming! As for the food, I got the Mess Breakfast with turkey bacon but subbed the waffles for French toast, and added a side of fruit. The food came pretty fast and it looked amazing. I excitedly jumped in on eating it and it was so delicious that I didn’t even realize that there were waffles on my plate instead of French toast. I mean these waffles were so fluffy with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Delicious! Some of the other reviews on here made me nervous about getting waffles as they said the French toast was better, but I’m really not sure what waffles they ate, definitely not these ones! With a restaurant with waffles in its name, it better (and does) have good waffles! Yet one of the waiters realized the mistake and he brought me a whole side of French toast. Thank you! Now I have leftovers for tomorrow morning and I couldn’t be happier. The rest of the plate was wonderful as well, down to the softest eggs, yummiest potatoes, and the freshest fruit - even the maple syrup was great. I could see myself coming here again and trying the Nutella waffle. My friend enjoyed the cookie butter waffle and a coffee. She said it was surprisingly a good cup of coffee! The only reason I deducted a star (I would only deduct half of one if Google would let me) was because I think the price was a little on the expensive side. That being said they do give you a good...
