We stayed at Home2 Suites in College Station for a couple of nights recently. Our home near Houston was directly hit by Hurricane Beryl and was without power for a number of days. Finding a hotel close to home proved quite challenging. I'm very grateful that we were able to get a room at this Home2 Suites.
I've stayed at Home2 Suites at another location, and liked it very much. Normally we book a double queen room when staying at a hotel. That was not an option, understandably, because hotel rooms within driving range were all quickly selling out (which was not surprising as more than 2 million people in our area were without power). We got a King 1 Bedroom at Home2Suites.
I actually liked the king 1 bedroom quite a bit (I think I actually like it more than having a double queen room). The king bed was nice and roomy. I really liked that the door could be closed (my partner and I work different shifts and sleep at different times, so this worked out quite nicely). The bathroom was gigantic. The kitchen was functional and was stocked with dishes. I appreciated that the fridge was a full-size fridge with a real freezer. There was a microwave, and a sign that said that a single burner cooktop was available on request. The living room was comfortable. There was a loveseat-sized couch which pulled out into a bed (though we did not use this feature, so I can't speak to quality or comfort). The desk area was nice and the office chair comfortable (which I was grateful for as I had to work remotely). I also liked that there was a moveable desk which I could position anywhere I wanted. The side tables next to the couch were also nested, and I was glad I could move the nested table where I wanted. The dining area had a table that seats four. There was a big tv in the living room and another big tv in the bedroom. There was also an air conditioner in the living room, and a second one in the bedroom.
The room was good. It had the basic comforts of home. The air conditioners were a little too effective, but that was a nice change from our home that had no power and no AC. We did not see any bed bugs, roaches, or other pests during our stay there. The room was quiet too, there were no disturbing sounds from neighbors (which was surprising considering the hotel was full). If I was in the kitchen/living area I could hear people walking down the hallway once in a while, but from the closed bedroom I couldn't hear a thing.
I can't speak of the hotel amenities, since we didn't use any. We were simply there to sleep and work remotely. The internet was decent for working (I paid extra for the upgraded connection which was not expensive, I think it was around $15 for two days). There are decent restaurants and fast food places nearby. I have celiac disease, and I'm limited on what I can eat and I actually had more choices in College Station than I do in my hometown. The hotel is nicely located, there are gas stations nearby and even an H.E.B. to stock the fridge for your stay. For those travelling with pets, there is a highly rated 24 hour small animal emergency hospital nearby too. We didn't need to use it, thankfully, but it was nice to know it was there.
I'm especially grateful that the hotel was able to accommodate us and our pets/support animal. Thank you Home2 Suites for giving us, and our animals, a comfortable refuge from...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTypically, I prefer to stay at Hilton-brand hotels, particularly Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, and Hilton. Recently, I was in College Station. The Embassy Suites was not an option this time, so I opted for this hotel over the dated Hampton Inn next to it, the Homewood Suites, the aging Hilton, and the better Hampton Inn off Highway 6. I had previously never stayed at a Home2 Suites, I had a suspicion that it might be a lower-tier extended stay brand, but, given that it was priced higher than the other options and well reviewed, I thought it might not be so bad. Unfortunately, I found it to be disappointing.
Upon checking in, I was given two room keys, neither of which worked, as well as one (instead of two) bottles of water for my loyalty status. Additionally, they entered my stay information incorrectly such that my internet credentials did not work. Though the staff resolved these issues, they were not terribly friendly.
The room itself, though spacious, felt very cheap. Overall, the hotel seems to be a low-level extended stay place. Instead of curtains, the small bedroom window just has a pull-down shade. In the bathroom, the water was very soft, and the kitchenette sink had poor drainage. Only one bar of soap is provided. The shampoo and body wash are in wall-mounted dispensers in the shower. No conditioner is provided. In fairness, the mattress was comfortable, but the towels were very cheap.
A proper cleaning is only performed every five days, and the light cleaning is not performed on weekends. One of my non-weekend light cleanings was skipped. They justify this poor service in their marketing materials by arguing the environmental benefits. I would counterargue that these decisions are more cost-saving measures.
The breakfast was disappointing, far below the quality of even a Hampton Inn or Homewood Suites, despite this hotel charging more per night. There were some milk cartons with best-by dates dating the same day, a few yogurt options, brown bananas, and microwavable breakfast sandwiches.
Overall, given the price, quality, and service of this hotel, both at a brand-level and specifically at this property, I was disappointed and will therefore view new additions to the Hilton brand...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHere for a business trip, Front Desk Supervisor, here to train front desk staff for our hotel opening. Stayed here for two days until our hotel opened. Johnathan was amazing. Quick check in and let me know about breakfast. Got in my room and found a used qtip in one of the cabinets and there was some damage to my window shades. Immediately called FD. Johnathan apologized about the qtip and he let me know that he would inform housekeeping and techs so they could fix it. Beds were small but very comfortable. Pillows were nice and soft. There was a couch in the room but it definitely needs to be replaced or reupholstered. Came down to the FD in the morning to get towels but no one was at the desk and no one came around the glass partition. I waited for about 1-2 minutes, still no one comes to the desk. The phone rings then the female that was sitting at the table next to the desk gets up and answers the phone. She finally acknowledged me when she got off the phone. I looked at her nametag while she was on the phone; it said Jenny. I asked for towels and she went in the back to get them. As I'm waiting for Jenny to come back with my towels. A different woman walks behind the desk, dressed very casually (blue jeans, white tennis shoes, and a jacket over a shirt) but she did ask if someone was helping me. Went back to my room after I got my towels. Left the hotel a bit later and Jenny on her phone at the desk.
Overall, Johnathan had great customer service and it was a pleasure talking with him. The lady that was an employee but I couldn't tell because she was dressed so casually and no name tag, had good service for acknowledgement of me standing at the desk. Jenny's customer service was terrible. If she was on break, she should have been in an area out of view from guest. If you're going to sit in an area in view of guest and eat but still assist guests, you should finish your bite and acknowledge the guest immediately. She was on her phone at the desk too a big no no. So, because of the qtip, the couch and Jenny's terrible customer service, I'd give it 3 stars.
Thanks for the complementary Granny Smith Apple. It was...
