A friendly place with consistently fine breakfast/brunch food.
For years B/CS sorely lacked breakfast/brunch/lunch options. But no longer. The newest entry, The Toasted Yolk, is now more than six months-old and is even more consistent and delicious than it was on opening in September 2021. We go often for one key reason: there are many more items we enjoy eating at this venue than at at any other. The Arnolds (The Toasted Yolk version of a Benedict), the omelet options, the traditional breakfasts, the breakfast sandwiches, the pancakes, French Toast, etc., are all very well-prepared and very substantial. The sides include a hash brown casserole and spot-on grits (with cheese as an option), but, we really appreciate that fruit may be substituted for the potatoes or grits; and, it's a good selection of usually nicely ripe and fresh. We wonder where they get their strawberries and melon.
In the meat departments the bacon is a solid, flavorful choice and the sausage (especially the patties) are large and tasty without being over- spiced. Our eggs are always prepared precisely as ordered and we are most happy that our poached eggs arrive with solid whites surrounding wonderfully runny yolks. Other restaurants should take note.
Crawfish feature in the Spring specials right now for those so inclined to a more exotic start to their day. The specials change with the season.
There is a nice selection of soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch but we usually focus on revving up our day with the breakfast.
For a new, chain restaurant ( but a locally-owned franchise), The Toasted Yolk has the feel of a long-time neighborhood place. Owners Mary and Scott are constantly walking about monitoring and making sure that guests are comfortable and properly served. The nice bar with its variety of adult beverages is ably captained by Isaac who just might have served an apprenticeship at Cheers! We also like that the servers are a personable mix of younger students like Luke and more experienced hands such as Roy.
Finally, the music is a low-key, snazzy mix of 70s, 80s, and 90s pop-rock, country and some occasional classic blues or soul. It's a lot like old mix-tapes that I've made. It's no wonder we feel at home here!
Oh, P.S.: There ARE numerous large screen TVs tuned to various sports. Their sound is off and I almost forgot to note them because we really don't notice them. usually forgetting they are there. But some might like their availability.
Try it out. A couple times. It...
Read moreI was excited to try toasted yolk based on the high reviews. Unfortunately, I didn’t even get a chance to try the food. We arrived around 11:30 on Labor Day. Understandably, they had a 30 minute wait for 2 people, but said we could sit at the bar if seats were available. We walked over to the bar and two seats were open but the table needed to be cleaned from the previous customers. We stood there for about 10 minutes and then ANOTHER CUSTOMER in the seats next to us offered to clean the table and move the glasses out of the way. So bizarre. Finally someone came and offered us a menu. The bartender took our drink order (water and a latte). When she brought over the latte we gave her our order and I asked for honey to put in my latte. She then proceeded to take everyone else’s order at the bar and even circled back to one group who were apparently her friends. After about 10 minutes she finally put our order along with others into the computer. After about 20 minutes she brought me honey when I was already almost done with my latte. Then, the people next to us who had placed their order at the same time as us received their meal and proceeded to complete their meal and we STILL didn’t receive our food. I then asked the bartender about the status of our order and after checking with the kitchen, she said they were just really backed up. How is it possible that others that placed their order at the same time as us received their food and ate it and we hadn’t even gotten our food? After having waited for an hour, I asked the manager to cancel our order because we were starving and couldn’t wait any longer. I ended paying for a terrible latte that costed more than Starbucks. I’ve worked in a brunch place before and I know how busy it can get but this place just doesn’t know what it means to take care of their guests. I would not recommend...
Read moreI would give 0 stars if I could, but it’s not possible. Me and my family of 4 were hoping to eat some delicious homemade breakfast but that was not the case. For starters, the OWNER came outside the establishment and insisted TWICE we come in near closing time, we were already walking back to our car to go to ihop. He bragged about the food being the best and portion sizes being big, none of which were true. When asked to exchanged a side of potatoes for some bacon because we were highly unsatisfied with the food tasting bland and old the owner went on a rant and gave us attitude about how “it costs him more money to make two strips of bacon than exchange a side of potatoes” when he was the one in the first place insisting on staying for the “good food”. The price of 2 strips of bacon wholesale compared to potatoes and cheese is negligible when it comes to keeping customers happy and fixing our experience being extremely unsatisfactory. The food was unflavorful, old, and overpriced for what it’s worth. In all seriousness fast food breakfast tastes better than this. Please listen to the other one star reviews and avoid this place!
UPDATE TO OWNERS RESPONSE: To the public reading this review: I have been nothing but 100% honest. The owner is trying to save face by throwing another untrue tantrum, and responding rudely to a tax paying citizen & paying customer. Newsflash owner: just because one small survey of handful of people say you’re the best in town doesn’t mean that the other 237,000+ other residents of Brazos county can genuinely find YOUR FOOD SUCKS! I would’ve considered deleting the review with an appropriate response & action from the owner, but given his rant he went on again, I...
