Jives’ owner physically and verbally attacked my husband 2 months ago. I cannot find my husband’s 1 star review here so I’m leaving another so others can be aware of how unpredictable and violent the owner can be. Let me be clear that we were regular customers that had only ever had a neutral experience at Jives before this incident - in fact, I had friendly conversations with the owner on more than one occasion before this happened. We live nearby, so Jives was our go-to spot. On the day of the attack, my family was visiting so my husband went to Jives to take a virtual meeting. I popped over to see what kind of pastries were in the case so I could order for everyone. I said “hi” to my husband and told him I’d be back once I got everyone’s order. As soon as I got back to my house (we live very close to Jives, ~2 min walk) my husband called to say that the owner attacked him. I ran back over and my husband said the police were already on their way. Apparently the owner was upset my husband hadn’t ordered anything yet and instead of speaking to him nicely, he decided to grab my husband by the neck and shove him all while cursing and threatening him. My husband is a fit, athletic 39 y.o. who could have retaliated, but instead he left calmly and immediately called the police. He has had neck pain for 2 months since this incident. I’m a psychotherapist, and my opinion is that the owner has something dangerously unresolved leading to his violent and unhinged behavior - and I will never ever go back in Jives out of fear for what he might do next. Let’s see if this review gets...
Read moreEvery time I am in town, my mother and I go here for coffee. I have been going here for the real coffee shop experience for the past 10 years. The coffee and tea are amazing. I have the chai today, and it was nothing short of spectacular.
However, the service was severely lacking. To begin with, I don't like places that ask you to tip before you have had service from them. But what I learned from tipping them today was that I will never tip here again.
Sure, they smiled and were mildly friendly when they took my order. Unfortunately, that is where it ended. As a handicapped person, I would have hoped that they would bring our drinks out to us. Rather, they giggled and laughed as the handicapped person tried to bring the cups to the table- one at a time- trying not to spill them. Three of them standing around and talking was far more important than giving the good service that I had tipped for.
As we were leaving, we found out that while regular people are allowed to go out the back door, handicapped people are not allowed to exit in the rear because apparently, according to the girl behind the counter, "it is not safe".
I gave them 3 stars because the atmosphere and coffee were great. Service was terrible, in my opinion. I certainly recommend going here, just don't tip- or wait and see if they have learned what service is...
Read moreThe atmosphere is the only reason I come here on occasion. They have books & classic games you can read and play, me and my husband like coming here to play chess & listen to the music. I like that they have open Mic and a piano open to the public. However, I'm rating it as 2 stars because the coffee is expensive but isn't that great, I'd honestly rather just go to Starbucks and pay the same amount for way better coffee or frappes. Most of their food items don't taste fresh or are pre-packaged. There's a lot of homeless people that come in, which is fine, but tonight a homeless man came in started literally banging on the piano for 10 minutes with me & my husband trying to have a conversation 2 feet away. We always get bugged for money or cigarettes and it ruins the coffee date. The barista wasn't very friendly, maybe it was a long shift but there was no smiling, thank yous or friendliness. She seemed very cold & annoyed. The bathroom is always disgusting, the locks are pretty busted, never have any toilet covers, there's tissue strung out all over the floor. It just seems they could take the time to clean up and make sure there's not random little kids or homeless people coming in to ask people for money or tobacco. Overall, its definitely not one of my favorite places to go for coffee. I was disappointed with it, especially...
