Really disappointing. Not somewhere I'd recommend or go back to. Certainly not a replacement for Bare Roots, despite occupying the same space.
I'm not sure who the audience is for this type of restaurant or if this was some sort of culinary experiment, but this doesn't seem fitting for an uptown Columbus restaurant.
On arrival we were told that no seating was available despite the restaurant being 3/4 empty, but what's frustrating is that it stayed mostly empty for our duration there. Maybe ALL of their reservations failed to show? It seemed very pretentious. This isn't Atlanta or New York, but I guess turning away customers for an empty restaurant is part of their business model.
The waitress also explained to us how the food wouldn't arrive at the table at once, because it was 'all made fresh', whatever that means. I guess that keeping food heated for a few extra minutes sacrifices the freshness of food? Can you just act like a normal restaurant and drop the culinary elitist attitude? The food wasn't that good, certainly not worth making my party wait the extra 10 minutes for all of our food to arrive.
On the surface, the menu may seem eclectic, but the end results made it all really just seemed like wordsmithing; an $11 plate of carrots or a plate of vegetables, a $18 ham or lamb burger, and then the $54 Steak. The prices didn't seem to match the end product. There's nothing wrong with simplicity in a menu, but I found that Animal Farm delivered far less than its menu descriptions...as simple as they are.
The $11 Buttered Vegetable Plate - literally just a small plate of cooked vegetables. Not impressive or anything that stood out. You'll still need a meal after this meal.
The $26 porkchop plate that only included a few small slivers of meat - 1 slice was all fat, 1 slice was all bone, and the two other slices were decent - no side of vegetables, and the plate only had a singular small sliver of 'Roasted Apple'. You will also need to find another meal after this.
Overall disappointing. We loved Bare Roots and it was our go-to for a good meal in uptown. Was hoping to find something similar in Animal Farm....
Read morei can’t say enough good things about The Animal Farm Columbus! 🐖 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 the environment is warm, welcoming, and cozy! even the bathrooms were perfectly put together and feels very homey. there is an outside dining patio as well that brings a freshness to your dining experience.
my partner & i try new places by ordering two dishes we both like & split them to critique them together. this evening we sat at the bar.
as an appetizer, we had the pigs in a blanket ($9) and they were perfect! the sausage is smokey and the puff pastry is light and airy while the sauce compliments it well.
for dinner, we ordered the smoked double bone pork chop ($36) and spicy tomato rigatoni ($18). these two amazing, well balanced dishes were unique and full of flavor. the pork chops easily could be split because it came with two while i was fully expecting one (the menu does say chop, leading me to believe it was one— but it’s definitely not something to be upset about!)
and for dessert, we had the peach cobbler that was served in the cutest, most rustic little cast iron with ice cream on top. it was perfect.
our server/bartender, marky, was kind and helpful while maintaining a very busy restaurant and bar— but made sure to set aside his time with each of his guests. we definitely will be back and throw five stars across the board for this place.
as a last note, i would make a reservation! they’re rightfully busy and with the food they serve at the quality they do— i don’t see them slowing down...
Read moreI had a delightful dining experience at The Animal Farm in Columbus, GA on October 7th. The restaurant's lively atmosphere, combined with an ongoing event, "Happy," added to the overall enjoyment of our visit. We decided to start with drinks and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of our choices. The Moscow Mule and Planter's Punch, priced at $6 each, were both fantastic.
For appetizers, we opted for the pigs in the blanket, which were packed with flavor. Our only wish was that they came in a larger portion, as we savored every bite of the $7 dish.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the braised beef pasta, priced at $25. I can confidently say it's the best meal I've ever had. The flavors in this dish were outstanding and left a lasting impression.
Our waiter provided excellent service, though we regrettably didn't catch his name. My boyfriend ordered the prime ribeye for $36, and it didn't disappoint. The flavorful meat, complemented by the delectable potato gratin, made for a memorable main course.
We couldn't resist trying two desserts. The banana pudding stole the show with its irresistible taste. On the other hand, the chocolate peanut butter pie, while good, didn't quite reach the same level of delight and likely won't be a repeat order for us.
Overall, our experience at The Animal Farm was exceptional, with stand-out dishes like the braised beef pasta and the banana pudding. We left with satisfied taste buds and a desire to return for more...
