This place was a great discovery. We got the tonkotsu ramen (spice level 2 and 3), gyoza, hokkaido fried rice, and spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna roll was pretty good, but the choice to keep the skin on the cucumber brought it down from being great.
The hokkaido fried rice was absolutely fantastic and was a big surprise.
We've been to Japan and been trying to find something that even remotely comes close to the ramen there.
The tonkotsu ramen at hokkaido was the closest we've found to authentic japanese ramen, with the caveat of it being MUCH less salty. It would be up to you if you find that a plus or minus. I missed it a little bit, but at the same time my mouth wasn't stinging by the time I was done with it. either way it was great. The only gripe I really have about the ramen was the pork chashu. It was not as fall apart tender as I would have hoped, but it did make up by having a lot more flavor than I expected. I guess I could say the broth was really good but did lack a little bit of the lip smacking texture/umami that was in ramen in Japan, but it was by no means disappointing.
The gyoza were a bit of a let down (though nowhere near as horrid as some other places claiming to do 'authentic' gyoza). They had been obviously rushed and nearly burnt without giving it a proper crispy crust on the bottom, but you can tell they were trying and maybe this one just got away from them.
Now, the big reason I can't give 5 stars is the fruit flies. There were a ton of fruit flies buzzing around us as we ate. I killed several by hand, and squished some others. It really brought things down a bit. We showed our waitress the ones we swatted and she apologized but no manager came over or said anything which was a little disappointing.
We'll keep looking for other spots, but this was far and above the best ramen we've found in the area. We'll likely skip the sushi and gyoza, but the ramen and hokkaido fried rice will be repeat...
Read moreFor a restaurant that’s only been open for about two months, this place was phenomenal.
For an appetizer, we ordered the Fried Calamari Rings and they were amazing. A perfect golden brown, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside with a savory coating. It also wasn’t greasy like other versions, a nice bonus. Of all the fried calamari I’ve ever tasted, this was the best.
The Crazy Boy sushi was much larger than I expected but had great flavors and a pleasing crunch from being lightly deep fried. It definitely wasn’t easy to pick up with chopsticks given how hearty the pieces were.
The entrees we ordered included Tonkatsu Ramen, Tantamen Ramen, and Kobe Beef Fried Rice. All of it was fantastic.
My Tantamen Ramen was toned down from its original spice levels to something more manageable. The broth had just the right amount of spice for flavor and kick. The broth also had the right amount of salt; thankfully not over salted like some places.
The grilled chicken was tender and the vegetables were fresh. The marinated soft boiled egg was tender and had a nice jammy yolk with a sweet flavor.
Overall, the portions were impressive for reasonable prices. My only complaint is that this place is so far from my area.
The atmosphere was very pleasant. I especially liked the music playing in the background.
I’d also like to thank our waitress Sophia for excellent service.
First chance I get, I’ll definitely revisit Hokkaido Ramen House. It would be no exaggeration to say this was the best ramen I’ve ever had. I hope this restaurant continues to maintain the level of quality I...
Read moreI was so excited to eat here tonight. We had some friends come to town to go to the Heartlanders game with us. They wanted to eat here because I said the food was awesome. The only caveat I gave is that we've been burned a couple of times because online orders took priority over our order. We still gave it a shot hoping things had changed from last hockey season. We get there. There's only a couple tables eating, so we are pretty confident we'll be able to eat in the hour we have before the game. The waitress was nice and took our orders and everyone was looking forward to a great meal. About 10 minutes later, the waitress comes back and tells us that a $400 online order came in and our food will be delayed 20 minutes. Uggghhh, not again!!!! This is seriously the fourth time this has happened to us! We couldn't trust their timing because we knew, from past experiences, that more online orders would come in and delay us even more. I'm so disappointed! You can't treat your dine-in customers like that. How you can't prioritize a table of 5 over an online order blows my mind. You also can't be right across from Xtream Arena and not take into account people want to eat there before events. You seriously just need to be a takeout place if that's your priority. We definitely won't consider this as an option before any event we go to at...
