Super funky, hole-in-the-wall/dive bar feel, dark ambiance with wooden tables down one side bar on the other. This is a walk up order bar and then sit where you’d like. Friendly service, the sausages and pretzels are house made so a must try for anyone.
House made pretzel: as big as your head with an outside crunch and inside fluffy carb heaven. Perfect for dipping in the beer cheese or mustard! Definitely a must try.
Beer cheese: subtle beer flavor without being too much. Not as salty as most chain restaurants beer cheese with is a plus because with the house made pretzels it’s a perfect combination.
Bierbrat, Garlic Pepper, Polish, Curry & Grippos Housemade Sausages: all have great snap, juicy and thick. Polish was my personal favorite all around, savory and mixed perfect with the stone ground mustard and sauerkraut. Garlic pepper was a nice blend however I would’ve preferred a bit more garlic in it. Bierbrat was good but my least favorite of the three, it didn’t have much of a flavor to it. Curry sausage was an interesting take on a sausage, I was intrigued by the option, it had a numeric blend and curry drizzle that if it was served with naan bread as a bun and a cream sauce it would’ve been perfect. The Grippos sausage (Grippos being the Cincinnati chip of choice) was underwhelming unfortunately. I didn’t know what to expect with this one, the flavor was there but texture wise it crumbled apart quite easily. I hope they don’t stop trying new combinations and I do believe there is great potential for a Grippos sausage if they can get the texture figured out.
Sauerkraut was your basic run of the mill sauerkraut that is a staple with any German delicacies.
Bacon slaw consists of warm shredded cabbage with bacon strips mixed in. Great flavor however for texture I would prefer crispier bacon in it. Had a vinegar taste that complimented and blended well with the sauerkraut.
Pierogis were delicious with about 6 on the plate covered in a cream sauce with crispy bacon bits and caramelized onions. Very good texture the filling was flavorful (for a pierogi) the onions and bacon definitely enhanced the dish.
Overall I would go back...
Read moreBeth & I came back from a Geocaching® trip to Tiffin, OH and I wanted some German food in Covington for lunch, so we stopped here. It's not a "dive bar", although the decor evokes one. It also has good, eclecticmusic piped in and they have a band at times. This is a civilized neighborhood watering hole - and a disguised boutique restaurant.
Yes, they advertise (and tap) many craft brews - but I had 2 of the 'House Made' sausages, braised cabbage and cucumber salad. They were DELICIOUS. Both sausages were fine-grain, lean and nicely browned. The Garlic and Pepper was savory - the Feuer was as advertised, but not ridiculously hot. The braised cabbage I first thought was Rott Koln, but it had no vinegar notes - instead it was subtly seasoned. Beth had a Brie/Spinach and Bacon sandwich with seasoned potato wedges. She fully enjoyed her meal as well and the bite she let me taste? Oh, such bacon! Lean, tender and tasty.
We'd recommend this to anyone. Even after lunch the bartender (very friendly and personable) was busy, so it takes a few minutes to order - and the meals are cooked to order - so don't expect fast food times because you're not going to get them. But it wasn't overly long either - I'd wait longer for this quality of a meal. We'll be back when we travel...
Read moreSuch an awesome vibe, the music has been top notch every time all 5 times I've been there, the drinks are cheap well cheaper than anywhere else in main Strauss though it's 2 blocks from Strauss village and 2 blocks from Madison&Pike bar district. The female bartenders are sexy, witty, and sassy the guy bartenders are funny, outlandish, and comically cynical towards the world as a whole! But I met the owner, and that guys super cool, he seemed very self-assured and confident yet still was empathetic and humble while connecting with the other patrons, when he took a moment to introduce himself to me he was really connecting and interested in who I was and what I do, with no other motives than to get to know me it was refreshing and that's why I keep going back. It's definitely Northern Kentucky's grateful Dead family bar! But it's definitely worth checking out to see if it's the kind of vibes you're looking for, there's good, real people there, playing real live music and eating great food! Definitely a "labradorite...
