To get a big complaint out of the way first, the parking here is atrocious. It's a very small lot and the entire time we were there people were waiting in their cars for spots to open up.
That being said, the food was probably worth it to many. My wife and I tried the wienerschnitzel, German potato salad, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut. We also tried their black forest cake and chocolate raspberry cake.
We were both very satisfied with the potato pancakes. They were crispy and flavorful and paired great with the sour cream provided (I also added their mustard and very potent horseradish to mine, which was fantastic.) Same thing for the wienerschnitzel.
I was the one who had the potato salad and sauerkraut and I thoroughly enjoyed them both. I'm a big fan of sauerkraut, but I never have it hot except when it's served that way in restaurants. This was easily the best I've ever had. So good that I didn't even feel it needed to be paired with anything.
The potato salad was also very delicious (especially with more horseradish, mustard, and sour cream.)
Both my wife and I loved the cakes. These were easily the best part of the meal.
The black forest was light and sweet and full of cherries. We had previously tried a black forest cake from a nearby bakery and it tasted like chemicals. This cake from Henk's was fantastic and felt like the real deal. Homemade taste and very high quality.
The chocolate raspberry cake had a very rich quality to it. The raspberry topping complemented the chocolate so well. We actually thought this one tasted better than the black forest cake, but it was so rich we both kind of preferred the black forest. I definitely recommend trying this one, though, because it was so delicious. But be warned, it is quite rich.
We'd both recommend going here even if you only did so just to try their cakes.
Inside, there's a really interesting selection of baked goods and Dutch candies and snacks. The dining area has a great...
Read moreI have been dining at and buying things from Henk's for years! My favorite times to go for a meal is right before the lunch crowd, around 11:00AM, or earlier, if I want to have breakfast. It can become crowded after 11:30.
All of their food is very good, but some of my favs are weiner schnitzel, cold potato salad, mild sausages, and bacon. For dessert, I usually have Apple Strudel or Florentine. They serve an impressive selection of beers. The waitresses are friendly, and efficient.
The bakery is always busy. They sell beautiful and tasty whole cakes as well as bread and pastries.
The deli has a wonderful array of cold meats and cheeses.
The dim grocery area is a delightful mixture of European specialties, packaged Christmas candy, cookies, cooking ingredients and wines.
The little diner is beginning to show it's age. It seems the owners are no longer interested in impressing new clientele and rely solely on repeat custom. The chairs wobble and the paper menus are blotched with food stains. The tableclothes are a dreary beige, but the bathrooms are clean. Still, I really like this place and will return...
Read moreThis place is a mixed bag at best. The Deli has a small selection and it is OK. I picked up some pate' and I it's not too shabby. The bakery/grocery has a very nice selection of treats and goods. We bought some cakes and a few other treats to remind me of my time in Germany.
Finally there is the restaurant. While the seating appears cozy and quaint some of it, namely the booth we sat in, needs attention. The service was about a five out of ten but could have been better. The schnitzel was sub-par, thin, poorly breaded and heated on the flat top. The sauerkraut was a bit bland, but not too bad. The cheese soup which, I hoped it would have been beer cheese soup tasted reminiscent of Velveeta and had weak flavor. My wife had the Rueben and she seemed satisfied, while my daughter enjoyed the German Burger. For an appetizer we have the potato pancakes and they seemed ok with enough sour cream.
After living in Europe, I know what I expect for European Cuisine and this kind of missed the mark for me. We may come back again, but it will most likely be...
