Was I at the same restaurant as these others that rated this restaurant so highly or are they fake reviews? I went with a guest to check out this restaurant based on the reviews. What I saw in the reviews was a polarization of good and bad, and based on my experience it was bad.
Service was excruciatingly slow and the owners daughter took our order then spent the entire time wrapping silverware in napkins. She never checked on us once. It took 45 min to get our food and there were only 2 other tables in the restaurant. We seriously thought about leaving.
My guest got a shrimp dish that was served with sautéed onions and peppers...... only, there were only 5 little slices of onion and pepper. The shrimp were cooked with the shell on, and by the time you tried to peel the hot shrimp, your hands were a greasy mess and all of the flavor was gone. My guest had special dietary restrictions and requested double plantains instead of the existing vegetables and was charged $5 more, bringing the price of the paultry plate to over $20.
I had the seafood soup. It had a small amount of seafood in it. It had a small crab with claws so small that the largest was smaller in circumference than my pinky finger. The bowl was just full of bits of crab shells when I tried to extract it. Additionally, there were skins left on the plantains that were in the soup. It was not worth the $15+ for a soup full of shells and peels that took over 45 min.
All 3 tables at the restaurant had to go up to the counter and ask for the to-go containers.
The food was not good. The service was not good. I question whether the reviews were real. I will not go back. This is my...
Read moreWhat a GEM this place is! It's located at an unassuming Hispanic shopping strip with bright interior and see through glass. Let me tell you- what blew us away about dining here was the wholistic experience that they delivered. The sweet waitress (who I didn't catch her name) was very friendly and enthusiastic to see that we were first time customers. It was very apparent that she's passionate about teaching the Honduran culture from the beginning to end- she brought out little samples of their popular drinks and even gave us Honduran banana soda on the House to try. She went through the menu and answered any questions we had gently and had great recommendations.
I ordered the seafood stew (caldo de mariscos) per suggestion by the waitress and let me tell you, it was the most delicious seafood stew I have ever had in my life. It wasn't a tomato based stew as I'm used to, but instead, a slightly coconutty -creamy-seafoody deliciousness. The seafood flavor was perfectly immersed in the soup without being overpowering. There were hefty amount of quality seafood and other toppings- crabs, fish filets, shrimp, yucca, veggies, other honduran ingredients that I didn't know the names of. Sooo delicious! Even my boyfriend who's not a big fan of seafood loved it. We really appreciated the quality of the food, large portion size, and the clean atmosphere along with friendly demeanor from the staff. It was not only a tasty experience but a...
Read moreIf you’ve never had Honduran food before, HonduMaya Latin Cuisine is like being welcomed to your abuela’s house—if your abuela had a PhD in seasoning and threw parties for your tastebuds. As someone who grew up in Honduras, let me tell you, I know good Honduran food when I see it—and this place delivers the real deal.
From the moment Nelly greeted me with a smile so warm it could toast tortillas, I knew I was in for something special. The ambiance is clean, cozy, and inviting—like the kind of place where you’d feel comfortable eating with your hands and then immediately apologizing to the table because it’s so nice.
As for the food? It’s like a flavor lottery where every ticket wins. I considered closing my eyes and pointing at the menu to decide, but I didn’t want to miss anything, so I did the obvious thing: ordered too much and ate it all. The baleadas? Exactly like the ones I grew up eating back home. The pupusas? Probably blessed by angels. If this is what Honduran food is like, I’m one plate away from moving there all over again.
HonduMaya doesn’t just serve food; they serve joy, nostalgia, and a reason to loosen your belt. Don’t walk here—run. And save room for dessert. Trust me, this is the...
