We’d heard good things and visited Moak’s tonight for dinner from it off town. The restaurant itself is near the train station, which is a rougher part of town, but we were still optimistic. When we entered, the cashier told us that they were already out of brisket AND ribs. Disappointed, we still decided to stay. We ordered the half-chicken, jalapeño sausage, Mac ands cheese, and the jalapeño cornbread. The cashier left halfway through taking out order and never gave us our order number, drink cups, or our receipt. He never came back so we ended up having to reach around the counter to get our cups and the receipt (so we could know which number we were). We went over to the pool table area while we were waiting and played darts but 8 out of the 10 darts were broken. There wasn’t any air conditioning, so it was hot, and when we got our food, we ended up refilling multiple times to cool off. The half chicken was a good portion, the jalapeño bread was really good, but the jalapeño sausage was a tiny portion and wasn’t even warm and the Mac and cheese was pretty bland. I felt like we gave Moak’s a chance even without brisket but the food was just okay. Not great, especially for Texas BBQ. Especially because our table didn’t have any BBQ sauce so we had to go find another empty table that had some. At the end of the night, we had to use the restroom but couldn’t find it. We ended up asking and they told us that it was downstairs. When we went down there, the women’s bathroom didn’t have a lock so my wife had me stand in the hallway to make sure nobody came in. Overall, we spent $30 to SHARE a plate of mediocre Texas BBQ in a sketchy part of town. Not impressed. If you do decide to go, get the jalapeño cornbread. That was the...
Read moreHere is an edit after my third visit in the past three weeks: I brought my girlfriend today for lunch and she can be a pretty big food critic. She is well versed in Texas BBQ and she exclaimed that the brisket here was better than another well-known place in Deep Elum! She loved the creamed corn (as I knew she would) and she convinced me to try the bean soup, which reminded us both of a Mexican bean soup with generous chunks of brisket and sausage. We also tried a half pound of smoked turkey and really liked the two choices of BBQ sauce with it (although the turkey was so moist, it didn’t need anything more). Finally, the Pit Master “David” came over to see how we liked the meal. He was so blown away by her review that he asked if we had tried the banana pudding (we hadn’t because we were stuffed), so he brought over a small tub which was so good we found room to finish the whole thing. I asked David what the secret to his brisket was and he said it was the quality of the meat plus the amount of time he takes to smoke it and render the fat into the beef. His rub seasoning is so easy, I won’t even put what he told us it was. Still a great place and I am going to bring more friends and family!
Wow wow wow! The brisket was so good! The quality of the meat really tasted through - no sauce needed. Not sure how they cook it, but it was very tasty. The sides we ordered were almost as good - go for the cream corn and Mac N Cheese....
Read moreHonestly, there are way too many better BBQ spots in Dallas to ever consider coming here again. While the staff was nice and welcoming and the space had potential, the food just wasn’t it.
We ordered the 2 person platter which included 2 meats and 1 side and we also got an order of the regular cornbread as well.
For the meats we got the Beef Rib and BBQ Chicken and then the Mac as our side.
If you like your meat to fall off the bone, the beef rib is not it. It was overcooked and chewy and it felt like they tried to hide it with a ton of sauce. The sauce made it edible but again I don’t want to hack and fight my rib.
The Chicken meat was so dry that I needed water to get it down. Even with their bbq sauce in the side, I couldn’t stomach it. We both had 1-2 bites max but the huge chicken was overall left uneaten.
The Mac was shocking as the noodle itself were decent but they topped it with cold shredded cheese. If you looked at the photo and thought I got slaw, I did too and was confused.
The cornbread was okay. Very sweet and softer than our preference. Tasted more like pound cake than cornbread to me.
If you told me everything was made days ago and just warmed up in the microwave I would’ve believed you.
Other memorable things was that their drink machine had no ice and some of the darts in the back had no dart tips.
I will say they had some pretty good sliced pickles available on the side
We ended up leaving and...
