I was so excited to see a Mediterranean restaurant in my neighborhood that I nearly crashed on Greenville Avenue trying to negotiate a left turn into Old Town Shopping Center. Tragedy averted and appetite unaffected, I walked into Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe and was promptly greeted by Bennie, the manager. He asked if it was my first time eating here and wanted to offer some suggestions for my dining experience. Not easily swayed, I politely declined since my heart (and stomach) was set on a lamb gyro. He mentioned that Taziki's aims to be more than a Greek restaurant and mentioned some Mediterranean fare they have. I will return for some of the other comestibles another day but for now, let me tell you about the gyro. Honestly, it wasn't the best gyro I've ever had but don't get the impression that I was disappointed. For the price I paid, I was treated to 2 sides of my choice where other places I only got the sandwich. I chose the red potatoes and fresh fruit. Both were quite nice with the potatoes being very yummy and well-seasoned. The meat I had was a little stringy and not as tender as I like it but in no way was I unhappy. The pita was soft and warm-real good. They put a little too much taziki on it for me but that's easy to fix by asking for it on the side. For the price, (around $14.) it was a good value and I left sated. For fast/casual, Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe is an...
Read moreSomeone from the restaurant was handing out promo cards at the gym I go to a few weeks back. Now I already have 2 Greek/ Mediterranean places nearby I like/go to. But I thought I'd give this new place a try. What a disappointment.
The food was okay but kinda dry and lacking in flavor.
What was more concerning though was the employee/service. He recognized the promo card as something an employee had handed out at the gym and mentioned that. In the year 2024, he thought it appropriate to then ask me how long I've been working out, had I lost weight, grimace at me, and then comment about how me getting a meal here isn't exactly eating healthy. I'm sorry, but what the heck..... if I wanted to be shamed about my workout routine, weight, and food I'm eating I'd go talk to a trainer. Completely inappropriate behavior for a restaurant employee and definitely let me know I have no need to ever eat at this...
Read moreDisappointed that portion size for chicken kebabs seems to be shrinking compared to when it first opened, and certainly compared to what you see online. Two skewers, yes, but the kebabs are now so small! Like the size of my thumb! Rice portion also meager. The plate was 2/3 salad.
We also had the grilled chicken “gyro,” and it doesn’t even use fresh grilled chicken! It’s those lame, rubbery out-of-the-bag strips with fake grill marks!
Combine that with mushy, unappetizing roasted potatoes for a side, and it was not enjoyable.
And now there are styrofoam cups! I swear when we’ve been here before (4-5 times) there were big white plastic cups. At least those are reusable.
Management, please turn the ship around! We’ll give it one more try some time, but it feels like...
