Was there for Father's Day for brunch, margaritas and bloody Mary's. I had ordered the A-bay bacon bloody and my wife the house bloody. Aside from a piece of pre-cooked store bought bacon that makes the A-bay different from the house, they came out watered down and tasted like it was made with only tomato juice, vodka, and pepper. If your open bar with an open bloody bar is one of your main attractions, having a 5-star house bloody mix should be a must, but I would give it only a 1 star.
I should break at this point and tell ya I rarely ever comment on bad food or service and will choke down the worst meals and say it's fine. While this wasnt the worst meal I've ever had nothing was redeeming.
I had ordered the smoked salmon Benedict with clam chowder as a starter. Wife ordered the crab cake Benedict. The clam chowder came out in less than 5 minutes and tasted like it had been rewarmed multiple times as it didnt taste fresh and the flavor if any existed had been cooked out. Flavor profile was completely off.
Now for the 3rd chance, the benedicts. I took 2 bites of mine and couldn't stomach finishing it. I couldn't get past the hollandaise, granted making a hollandaise is one of the hardest things to get right, if it's wrong start over. The hollandaise tasted nothing more than thickened melted butter and ruined the dish. The eggs were more hard boiled than poached and the onions were sauteed in what was mostly water from what I could imagine. Flavor profile again was completely off and missing salt. My wife who loves crab cakes took one bite and said "nope." Crab was "mushy" and left a horrible after taste. I tried it and crab tasted old and again missing seasoning.
Our server was amazing and was the restaurant's only saving grace and did everything he could to make it right. Management on the other hand came by to see what they could do if anything but never inquired as to why we were dissatisfied with our meal. So hopefully they read this to see that they need to overhaul their cooking staff and bar tenders with retraining or hiring a new. Atmosphere was great and would hate to see them go under but if they dont do something that's exactly what...
Read moreMax’s Gill & Grill is a neighborhood treasure. If you’re looking for a relaxing atmosphere, this is your place. It’s mostly a sea food themed restaurant in the quaint Gaylord St. shopping area, between University & Wash Park. They do have other dishes like chicken, ribs, etc…if sea food is not your thing. Nice tiki bar and patio areas in back. Low key lighting. The staff are all great!!! Love the rustic look and feel, a constant for decades. Always a mix of reggae and island music playing. Love the half circle bar up front. Plenty of TVs on with sports playing. 100% family friendly. Parking is limited. We often end parking a block to two blocks away, but it’s always a pleasant and easy walk (amazing neighborhood). Max’s food is great - not a bad dish on the menu (see my app pics). Restrooms are small, but clean. Great drink selection and absolutely worth the money. They have a very good Happy Hour each day. Wednesday’s, all you can eat wings special. Thirsty Thursday’s, all day happy hour. Seriously, you can’t go wrong...
Read moreWe love this place, so much so that we went twice in the same week...everything is usually great but this time the sevice left A LOT to be desired. My husband and I were wishing we had been seated in a different section because we noticed how attentive the other servers were to their tables...our waitress was MIA from our table. She didn't bring our food out, after she took our order and brought us our drinks, we didn't see her again until we were halfway done with our meal, the person who brought us our food didn't ask if were ok/needed anything else. Our waitress brought our check then went MIA again, she didn't take our payment or bring us the receipt. I don't know what the issue was but not okay for the price. Yes they were busy but again, the other waitresses had no issues being attentive to their tables, my husband said he saw our waitress go to other tables mutiple times, and we were just there the previous Monday and they were shorthanded (only 2 servers) and the...
