Bert's Marketplace — Restaurant in Detroit

Terrible experience. I have a problem with establishments that place a mandatory gratuity on every order, regardless of the number of people. From my experience, when they do that the service tends to be compromised because the server knows they're going to get a certain amount regardless of how they take care of you. When we first arrived I ask for a glass of water. The server tells me they only have bottled water. Of course they don't give bottled water for free. I have NEVER been to a restaurant where you had to pay for water. So I nix the water and ask for lemonade. They bring out a plastic cup of lemonade, of course with no refills. So we're nursing these little drinks while the food takes a good 35/40 minutes. I tried to order a salad, they said they didn't have any lettuce. We ask for pickles, they didn't have any pickles. They finally bring the food out and it's all in to-go containers, inside plastic bags. My wife ordered the BBQ chicken and said it was the worst chicken she ever tasted. We sent it back and she got a turkey burger. We get the bill and they were still charing us for the BBQ chicken. At this point, all patience had went out the door. We expressed our concerns (and there were more than issues than I typed) to the server and she was unbothered. She had all these excuses as to why we got the experience we did. She really didn't care because at the end of the day she was still getting her mandatory gratuity. Then if the gratuity wasn't enough, they charged you more if you used a credit or debit card. This place is shameful. Bert is sitting in the back getting rich off this raggedy, ghetto establishment, all while he is driving people away. I hope the few people down there ballrooming were enough to sustain your business because we would NEVER go back there. I don't know of any reputable restaurants where you pay over $100 for a meal and you're eating with dollar store plastic forks and drinking out of plastic cups. I could go on and on but I'll stop. Please heed my warning and stay far away...

I was so disappointed in the service and price at Bert’s. I decided to stop by Berts and get a quick dinner to go. The atmosphere was nice, people were happy and the ribs smelled good; therefore I order a dinner for 24.99. I was told and read that the dinner consisted of ribs and 2 sides. I placed my order and as I waited I listen to the music. 30 minutes went by, no trace of my waitress so I got up looking for her. I saw her quickly moving so I asked her what was taking her so long? It didn’t make since because the grill was packed with ribs and people were walking up purchasing food. I waited another 15 minutes and decide to cancel my order and order some fries. My fries came fast and by then an hour had passed. The waitress saw me leaving and said “hey I I have your food”. I told her I was leaving and it didn’t make sense how long it took to get a carry out. I decide to pay for the food. She took my card and again she was gone for about 10 more minutes (I am pissed off now).. I read my receipt and it said 32.50 for a 24.99 meal. I said, “what are you charging me for.” She said your dinner. I asked her why is it 32.50 and the menu said 24.99? She said because you ordered two sides. I said you mean to tell me I paid extra for sides plus 24.99? I went to say,”plus I only had two chunks of yams”. She said oh no problem I am going to get you some more yams. She never address the extra fees. She left so fast that I didn’t have time to say anything g else. I turned and asked a young waitress about the extra money fee and she had the nerve to point to gratuity at the bottom of the menu. 18% (What the heck!!). Why should I pay gratuity for a carry out that took a person over an hour to return? I was so angry that I wanted to throw that bag across the room and find that waitress. She ripped me off and she knew that she should have not charge me an extra 7 dollars for her poor service. All I can say is that losing 7.00 was worth me...

My name is Officer Daniels and I order from this place all the time I have never seen something so disgusting in my life today is Mother’s Day and I wanted to relax and I ordered myself and my partner something to eat this place through our food together I ordered macaroni and cheese and yams they literally put a child spoon of macaroni and cheese on top of some smash blended baby food type yams loaded in cinnamon water not in separate containers they literally were ignorant and put a spoon of macaroni on top of the water down smashed yams I ordered spareribs with gravy they came with ice chips on them literally smooch to the side like they were feeding a dog I ordered a slice of six dollar carrot cake they literally sent me this piece of lemon cake that was the size of my three-year-old baby finger a macaroni and cheese smelled like throw up and then when I called there was a young lady who answered the phone at 5:11 PM on Mother’s Day she had the nastiest attitude she found it hilarious as I was telling her this was extremely wrong on how you treat your customers I have been a customer at this place for the longest today was the day that I truly hope this business gets close down they are keeping their food out you can tail it is smelling spoiled when you open it I just am truly Appalled by what I received today And for the young lady to find it amusing and funny knowing that they just threw people’s food together today and served us with the most disgusting you I have ever experienced in my life I hope this place does not need to be protected by our Precinct and I’m on duty the way we were treated she needs to be fired and they need to be close down the other review speak for itself the macaroni and cheese literally smell like vomit and it was mixed with yams that’s how nasty they sent us food shut down this place I am calling everywhere to have this place investigated do not eat here trust me This is exactly how my food arrived...
