Wanted to love this place. The reviews were great and we went in very hungry. We just arrived in Minnesota and had to find a place to make up for missing breakfast due to an early flight and tight connection. Don't get me wrong, food was decent but portions were ridiculously large which usually isn't a problem but you pay for it. Asked for some homemade hash with 2 eggs and toast and the plate must of had over a pound of chopped up "hash meat" mixed in with shredded potato and some onion. It was good for the first 5 bites then the realty set in... couldn't eat 1/4 of it. Actually felt guilty knowing that the rest would be thrown own so shoveled in too many more forkfuls and it changed the taste dynamic. Coffee wasn't delicious but it's a diner so didn't expect it to be. On a good note, the toast was spectacular and the service was excellent. The cook stopped by and the lady serving was super pleasant. Cost almost $40 for the two of us to get 2 breakfasts and a coffee. In the end, the place would be better served cutting down on the portion size for the hash and upgrading the potato component. Don't let the review dissuade you, it's worth trying out. My review was based on one meal experience, this place deserves...
Read moreWe’ve lived in Eagan 15 years and only just discovered Hovies. Best diner we’ve found in all of the Twin Cities metro area and I can’t believe it’s in our town! First off, the service wasn’t just good, it was exceptional-the woman who served us was warm and welcoming. And the food! The omelette was stuffed with cheese. It was piping hot and the toast came out warm, too, with butter covering the toast (I hate cold toast with a squirt of liquid fat). The breakfast potatoes were fresh, perfectly crispy, and notable for the lack of rancid fat after taste that so many diners have on their potatoes. Also, the diner was CLEAN!! It was old, charming, but-and I can’t stress this enough-clean. The floor wasn’t sticky or slippery. The old sports memorabilia and pictures on the wall weren’t dusty or grimy. The condiments weren’t scummy. The salt and pepper shakers sparkled. And the bathroom, while also old, was very, very clean. Our new favorite Saturday...
Read moreThis family owned restaurant is terrific! Some people on here are complaining that it’s small and understaffed. I’ll counter that by saying it’s cozy and personable.
My wife and I first visited Hovie’s about 8 months ago and now we go there for breakfast about once every other week. We like to order the French Toast (which is delightfully crispy) and a sausage or bacon omelette and share half of each.
The food is delicious, you can’t get more friendly service, and supporting family run businesses always gives you the warm fuzzies (especially the days when you see their young children hauling bags of produce into the kitchen)!
If you are looking for breakfast in Eagan, this is...
