We had a delightful first experience at Pig Latin on Friday. We were able to get a last-minute reservation for 4:30, which worked out great because it was Happy Hour. We really loved the decor and the whole vibe of the place, with the huge patio opening onto the Greenbelt. I would say the only downside to the location is a lack of parking.
Our server, Jordan, was stellar. He really went above and beyond, describing the menu items and making recommendations, as well as telling us what makes the restaurant and the menu special.
For Happy Hour, they have BOGO drinks, as well as a handful of small plates and tacos at a discount. I really appreciated that the BOGO drinks could be mixed and matched and also didn’t have to be alcoholic. My husband and I are normally not drinkers, but the drinks sounded so unique that we each decided to get a cocktail. Jordan was super helpful with drink selection and was spot-on with guiding me to a drink to match my preferences. The cocktails were obviously carefully crafted and were well balanced, with interesting flavor profiles and not light on the alcohol, either (as lightweights, we each only drank about half of ours). For our second drink, we each decided to try the banana matcha, which was delicious, and I was even able to get mine to go (in an eco-friendly cup, no less); my husband is a bit of a matcha connoisseur and was impressed. As a coffee and tea lover, I love that they have a full espresso bar. Even the water is apparently special filtered water from an expensive machine.
For food, we mostly went with Jordan’s recommendations, and he did not steer us wrong! We got the maduros at HH price, which had some sort of sweet and sour sugar crust and then came with a habanero aioli (I could be wrong on the pepper type) and it was truly a flavor explosion of sweet, salty, tangy, and spicy all mingling together. He also recommended the skirt steak with chimichurri, which I was eyeing already, and the PL Burger with truffle fries. The skirt steak was insanely tender and flavorful. The burger was really good - although my husband said he would get it with two patties next time for a better bun-to-meat ratio - and the truffle fries were off-the-hook crispy and savory. The one slight miss was the quesadilla with bay shrimp that my husband decided to go with (I didn’t think it was a good idea, but for some reason he sat down and immediately wanted that before our server even came over). It was just nothing special, although the salsas it came with were good, but the main problem is that they put the pico de gallo IN the quesadilla, which made the bottom pretty soggy by the time we finished it. At the last minute, we added a beet and goat cheese salad for balance (which Jordan automatically offered to split into two bowls for us); by the time it came, we were honestly too full to eat much of it, but that plus the remainder of my skirt steak made great leftovers.
On top of being personable and making great recommendations, Jordan also brought us a complimentary bowl of chips to go with the rest of our salsas from the quesadilla, because he said we had to try the house-made beef tallow chips. (Huge props to this place for being seed oil-free!) At the end of the meal, after asking if we wanted to try the tres leches cake and us telling him we were way too full, he seemed to disappear for a while before coming back with the check. His service had been so prompt and attentive throughout the whole meal that I was starting to wonder what had happened when he came back with a bag for our leftovers and a complimentary piece of cake to go, apologizing and explaining that was why he took a little longer to come back! Not normally a huge fan of tres leches, but it was also delicious and not overly sweet when we ate it later. We felt our total bill at $122 was extremely reasonable. I’m not sure if Jordan somehow knew we had been having a bit of a rough week and took extra good care of us or if that’s just his norm, but this felt like the mini-vacation that we needed and we will...
Read moreWas really looking forward to this place. Took my friend for our annual celebration, and my daughter’s birthday is coming up and wanted to check it out to see if we should do her celebration here! the online presence and vibe of this place is exciting, but after that everything about the experience was a downhill ride. We had 4:00 reservations, we got there 25 min early, not wanting to walk in before doors open we sat and chatted, about 15 till we saw people start walking in so figured we would too. Upon arrival was asked if we had reservations. We did, I gave my name 3 times and was told that staff is still getting tables ready so it will be a few min ( still 15 before opening so didn’t think too much of it) meanwhile groups of people are coming in and getting seated immediately. Weird but ok/ at about 4:05 I ask them again when our table would be ready. I was then told in a rather passive aggressive rude way that they are working on “finding”us a table, (Over 3/4 of the restaurant was open, still weird but ok, (we are pretty chill laid back woman so didn’t think much of it) about 10 minutes after that, one of the hosts come up and tell us they “managed to find us a table but said we have to be gone by 5:30” ??? I questioned why do we have a time limit? She told me it’s because we are walk ins! SMH! I told her again we have a reservation @4 - frazzled she goes back, and discussed the mix up with the others at the front and about 5 minutes later shuffled us past the booths into the back part of the restaurant. Ok still being positive we Quietly took our seats, was told a server would be with us in a few minutes. After several more minutes no server. Meanwhile we are looking at the table we were set at as well as the surrounding area, our table had green, and red salsa, smeared and dripped all over of the table. Chips on the bench and floors. Finally someone sees us and we ask if we can get someone to please clean the table and the surrounding area. While waiting we are talking about how maybe we should just leave and find somewhere else, right then the rude passive aggressive hostess, did walk up and apologize Profusely for his rude tone and was very much Accountable for his mistakes and actions. My friend then said a great way to make it up was if we could get a clean table and seats in the sunroom area. He agreed and within a few minutes had us seated and did apologize again for the mistake and behavior. Big high 5 to him! That was much appreciated and honestly the Best part of the experience. ( someone actually taking accountability and action over their own mistakes and stepping up) We sat down and rest was pretty smooth from there. However few things to note. Looking at the floors, benches and chairs there were levels of chips, food, & hair on flat services. (This includes the 2nd location we were sat in as well) I got the jerk chicken, she got the Carnitas street tacos. I also got take out for my man and got the fish & Carne Asada street tacos. Food was below quality of what should be expected at this type of restaurant. The bill for 11 tacos & 4 drinks was more then I would expect, but they have a big building to pay for And all prices have gone up so can’t really bit#h about that, since this seems to be the new normal in the food industry. Overall I was extremely disappointed. - funny part (is any of this is funny? ) is we basically were done at 5:30 and there were still over 3/4 of the restaurant with open booths and seating- so still confused why they would have needed us out by 5:30? Overall experience. Food was edible, (not the best tacos for being a menu that claims to have brought parts of the world food into its menu) the waiter who actually served us was excellent. Restaurant was dirty (maybe I was hyper aware after the nasty table area we were sat at the first time) Sorry to leave a low review, but quality of service needs to step up if your going to stay in...
Read moreWas originally Going to leave a four star As to not hurt a new business, but decided after reading other Reviews to leave a three star as other people have said they would return after a four star review and also noting that no management or anyone has responded to any reviews negative or positive.
I made reservations weeks in advance for my birthday. It happened to lie on Mother’s Day Sunday and also the weekend of graduation in Boise. My reservation was solely for my husband and I For patio seating with Special accommodations Put in the notes for such seating as it was for my birthday.
We arrived on time for our 6 o’clock reservation. We were initially told that our table is ready and was taken to an un-bussed dirty table in the very back of the restaurant inside. both my husband and I Have Extensively worked in the service industry. I would usually opt for not caring so much about detail. But this establishment upset me greatly, Especially being my birthday. After being sat At said dirty table and asking them if we would be able to sit outside as that was what my reservation was made for, it seemed as though we were given gruff for asking as such and told we would have to wait. And that they weren’t seating people outside as there was a storm coming. There was no storm coming according to my weather app.
We sat at the bar. I have been trying Out ordering a new tequila drink. The bartender made me feel like shit for trying to order tequila and Grand Marnier shaken served up with an orange twist. Now I know that is not normal, but I don’t understand a pompous prick blatantly calling me out for that.
We get Sat finally outside. I ask why it was such an issue, and if other tables were gonna be sat after us. We are told yes they will be in the next 20 to 30 minutes. I don’t understand why we couldn’t be sat because the storm was coming. Yet they still have so many open tables going to be sat on the next hour. No good response.
After being sat, we were finally greeted by a training server 15 minutes after sitting. (Too long for 3 people working the host stand including management) We probably got our drinks after about five minutes at our table that we had ordered At the bar. The most delightful part of our experience there was that the drinks weren’t bad and that the training server who eventually came to our table was sweet and polite. But I felt bad for her as my husband and I both know that she was sent as the Sacrificial lamb for the staff knowing We were unhappy and unimpressed with the service Thus far.
My initial thought was to at least order appetizers, but after waiting so long for anyone to even acknowledge our disgruntled experience, we decided to leave after only having a cocktail each And deciding to go elsewhere for dinner. I know it was Mother’s Day, but the way the entire experience was handled was atrocious. I can’t believe I was so upset by so many staff members in one visit. The only competent staff members were the youngest hostess and the training server. Thank you two.
From two people who have worked in service industry for a long time we implore You to do better. Doubtful that we...
