Was sitting outside with my well behaved dogs enjoying ice cream with my family until an employee approached us and asked us to leave because “ Edgartown Public Health policy does not allow dining outside with you dogs in an area like *points to area we’re sitting”. (Looked this up and found no official statement — only contrary information stating that the island was dog friendly and has become increasingly dog friendly even through the pandemic.) I believe this was a case of discrimination as moments earlier a customer sitting inside at the window had pulled aside the employee and was gesturing to my family as she was talking to the employee. Not sure what we ( who were. Sitting outside) could’ve done to upset or irk her ( who was sitting inside ). I was very confused as my dogs were both laying down out of the way of foot traffic and are well socialized ( a kid sitting at the table next to us had asked politely to pet one of them and my dog laid still and wagged his tail as the kid interacted with him). Would not recommend if you’re looking for a place to COMFORTABLY enjoy ice cream with your party traveling to the Vineyard .
EDIT: Owner responded to the original post but I’m still waiting on proof of these “policies” . I would assume that a town with such strict adherence from business owners would have policies distributed in writing both online and in print to make sure their glaringly obvious to everyone....

I had a terrible experience at Mad Martha’s Ice Cream. The customer service is awful, and there are almost no guidelines for hygiene. When I told the lady working at the counter that my youngest son had a peanut allergy, she told us that all the ice cream flavors, whether they had peanut or not, had a 100% chance of cross-contamination. When I asked why, she told me that she uses the same spoon for all the flavors, and she doesn’t wash them at all afterwards. I was appalled, and my son was very much disappointed, but he decided that a cup of root beer would have been fine. But then, I was told that there were no cups left, even though I could see several cups left on the counter! Overall, the employee also had a bad attitude, and clearly had no sympathy for my son, who had just wanted a sweet treat. I doubt I will ever be coming back to this place and I wouldn’t recommend...
Read moreTonight I took my TWO YEAR old daughter into Mad Martha’s to take her for an ice cream while on vacation with our family. The young man working behind the counter who was not wearing a proper mask himself told me she needs to be wearing a mask; when I said she was 2 he questioned me and said “only 2”? My daughter is tall for her age, as my husband 6 “4” and she inherited his height. I was so irritated when he questioned how old my own child was, and for the reasons per the CDC a child who is 2 and under doesn’t need to wear a mask I was so appalled. He made me feel guilty for not having a mask on my child when it is not necessary, when all I wanted to do was give my daughter a treat on vacation. I walked out the door without ordering and will not...
