Newman's Grotto — Restaurant in Eugene

Service is very quick, especially if you order online for pick up. My favorite is the halibut and fries basket and it is a very, very generous portion of halibut. Perfectly cooked. I usually feel like I don’t need to eat anything for the rest of the day when I have lunch there because the portions are that generous. Fish is extremely fresh and top quality. I also love their salmon basket. And again three generous pieces of fish and a BIG pile of thick cut fries. You definitely get your money’s worth and as far as I’m concerned along with the fish they have the best tasting fries in town! Everybody’s polite and friendly who works there. Very accommodating and genial. 5 stars for cleanliness, too.

Not that it’s important because I usually do takeout, but the seating is limited inside… So in the winter time when it’s raining or snowing it’s a bit crowded. When the weather is nice they have excellent covered seating outside as well which is really pleasant and fun with all the big shade trees around. The cramped seating inside is the ONLY reason I didn’t give it five stars for “Atmosphere” but that’s not because I’m mad about it or anything it just is what it is: A super excellent little hole in the wall Seafood place.

I’m a huge fish and chips fan, and I can confidently say there’s no better place in the world to get them than at Newman’s Grotto. Their halibut fish and chips are absolutely top-tier—crispy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. They also offer salmon and cod if you want to mix it up, but for fellow fish and chips lovers: go with the halibut. You won’t regret it.

Newman’s has a diverse menu with more than just fish and chips, including daily specials that keep things fresh and fun. And let’s talk about their tartar sauce—it's so good, you’ll want to buy a container to take home (and yes, you actually can!).

The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, and the customer service is consistently outstanding. The team is kind, hardworking, and always makes you feel at home. I usually dine in, but I’ve noticed a constant flow of takeout orders being picked up while I’m there—which tells me their takeout game is strong, too.

So the reasoning for my review is simple the location isn't that convenient the parking and the take out parking is limited and driving around the lot is not easy with such a small space also the staff is nice but the biggest problem and reasoning behind my rating is that the fish is simply just way overcooked I have had the cod and the salmon battered of course and both are way overcooked and I am a fan of fish and a big fan of salmon so pretty disappointed when it's overcooked and I love sushi so I can be easy to please but haven't tried this place twice I won't be back again and am now seeking better options for my love of seafood. Coming from the bay area in California my palate and the way I like my seafood cooked is way up there but I am still willing to give other restaurants here in Oregon a try just not this one again.
