My husband took me to Tavern 1888 for my birthday dinner. We’ve always liked the Eagle House, so, I was happy for us to try it. The atmosphere is beautiful overall, BUT, really dark which makes it hard to read the menu. We ordered a couple of the craft drinks offered my husband got the martini (asked for extra dirty) and I got the cherry sour. Neither of us finished either of the drinks. His had feta cheese in the bottom and no brine (so NOT dirty as requested) and mine was literally so sour it was undrinkable. There was NO definable cherry to it at all. Every sip felt like I just licked that puckering sour patch kid powder coating with NONE of the sweetness to balance or calm it on your tongue. Took maybe 3 sips. Not once were we asked if there was something wrong with the drinks. We were going to order the bread and olive oil for appetizer. (Classic) The server asked my husband if he wanted to add the cheese option to it. He said sure. We got it and found out that if you add the cheese they do not give you ANY olive oil. You get a lump of some tasteless cheese with some kind of onion mixture and a pile of bacon. It was not appetizing at all. For the mains, my husband ordered the scallops and I ordered the French chicken minus the pasta. I have to say that the mains were very good and we were relieved and very happy. For dessert we ordered a butterfinger cheese cake to share and it was lovely. All in all, not a horrible experience and good food if you know what to avoid. Stick with the classics for drinks (not the craft drinks - they seem to be a bit gimmicky and lacking in great flavor profiles) and keep it simple for the appetizers (avoid the additional options). Enjoy the on point main courses and the melt in your mouth...
Read moreMy husband and I decided to try this new restaurant for a date night (*reservation recommended). Holy goodness this was an amazing experience. Drink selection was incredible and the house made cocktails are phenomenal. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table and the bar tenders were so attentive and fun to chat with. The kitchen is open so you can see the food being prepared and the Chef was so approachable and accommodating. We were asking how spicy the curry dish was and he brought out an array of spicy peppers he picked up at the local farmers market to choose from. At the bottom of the menu there is a long list of local business where they source all their ingredients and wow does it show in the food quality. Once seated our server was so kind and attentive. We ordered the Bison and shishito peppers to start and wow…just wow. Bursting with flavor and so tender, it’s a must try. Husband got the filet and he said it was the best he’s ever had at a restaurant; melt in your mouth like butter kind of steak and perfectly cooked. I got the duck and green curry and wow! I didn’t want it to end. I got the Mexicali cocoa martini for desert and we savored ever drop it was so good. If you are looking for a fun date night or a true dining experience this is a MUST. We even made our next reservation before leaving it was that good. We will be seeing you all at 1888 Tavern again soon! Thanks for a truly...
Read moreThe tavern 1888 offers such a delightful food experience and puts the cherry on top of everything the historical Eagle House has become over the last several years. The staff went above and beyond any dining experience I’ve had here in humboldt county. We were greeted several times throughout our meal for a satisfaction check by the host, general manager and even the head chef, John. Because of the amazing things we had heard from friends that came the night before, we started with 3 appetizers. The beet tower had a more fruity refreshing twist than a usual beet salad, the duck confit gave us an opportunity to sort of sample the duck entree although there is a slight difference in additional ingredients and the braised ribs were friggin ridiculously remarkable. My ravioli entree was literally the best damn raviolis I’ve ever had and even though I struggled on my decision over the filet mignon I didn’t regret it after trying this dish. Just wow. The combo of bolognese and pesto is out of this world amazing. My wife’s Lions main mushroom cake entree was delicious as well and is a great offering for those who don’t eat meat. John, Jason, Jess, Veda and the whole 1888 crew, thank you for making our anniversary dinner with...
