Birthday dinner for the win at Playa Azul Mariscos Estilo Sinaloa!

Playa Azul is hands down the best spot for shrimp tacos in town! We ordered three plates of shrimp tacos (three tacos per plate), which are listed under appetizers, but honestly, we love tacos too much to care.

We also tried the shrimp ceviche and their shrimp and cheese empanadas (four per order) as appetizers. Both were incredibly flavorful, but the empanadas were a standout for me—so delicious! My niece enjoyed the kids’ chicken quesadilla, and we couldn’t resist a side of fries, which were surprisingly excellent.

The specialty cocktails were a treat as well. The Flamingo Mojitos and Costa de Oro were not only visually stunning but worth every penny.

The restaurant itself is beautifully designed with a warm and inviting atmosphere. While Playa Azul is primarily a seafood restaurant, they’re planning to add more non-seafood options in the future. So if you’re a seafood lover, this is the place for you—but maybe skip it if you have a shellfish allergy!

The portions were huge, the food was okay. Nothing spectacular. Just “meh”. I was expecting like actual grilled shrimp, instead they were covered in a sauce. You can’t read a good portion of the menu because it’s too small and the font and background colors clash. The thing that got me was that our bill was $78, like 84 with taxes. The first check we were given had a $3.64 supplemental charge PLUS 15% automatic gratuity that we were not informed of added on, making it around another $16 added onto our check. THEN, at the bottom of the check, they print out how much you should tip, adding a tipped percentage for the taxes, supplemental charge, and automatic gratuity. I don’t play that game. I’m not tipping on an automatic tip. I DO NOT support sneaky business practices. I had the server take the automatic gratuity off, then deducted the $3.64 out of what I would have tipped. We ordered the botana mixta and aguachiles. I couldn’t believe what was served as the reviews were pretty good. If you know anything about good mariscos this spot is not it. The shrimp tasted exactly as if they were over boiled, placed on a plate, and then topped with black pepper. All the food lacked seasoning. The place is nice and clean.
