McAlister's Deli — Restaurant in Fargo

Okay so first off the two stars are for how clean the restaurant was and how friendly the people were. With that being said I am a Jersey girl and this is not a deli! Considering the first deli that opened in the United States was in New York I think I know a lot about delis as I have been to many in that area my whole life.

My SO ordered the Italian. It was filled with ham and black olives😬😬 I mean come on a real Italian doesn't have any ham aside from capicola. Which was not on this "Italian". Also it was toasted😳 who does that?? The condiments included spicy brown mustard and balsamic vinaigrette. 😳 clearly not an Italian sub. Definitely should be labeled something else.

I had the grilled chicken on a croissant. I added provolone cheese instead of Swiss because I am not a fan of Swiss. This was not bad. That was pretty much the only option on the menu that I wanted to eat. Knowing how they cut lunch meat out here super thick. I felt the grilled chicken was the safest option. Typically a deli uses chipped or very thin meat.

Since the reviews kept talking about their famous sweet tea we decided to give it a try. Not sure what I'm missing here, this tastes exactly like any tea that I've made in my microwave in a big bowl 🤣 it's your regular sweet tea. Maybe that shocking to people in North Dakota because they don't have much flavor in 98% of their food. But to us transplants, it's just your regular old iced tea 🤷‍♀️

The sides we had were potato salad and mac and cheese. Again your typical grocery store potato salad and the mac and cheese was A step above kraft.

I fell in love initially with the vegetarian sandwiches then sometime in July I had an experience where I ordered vegetarian sandwich and to my dismay and disappointment when I got home it was like two small pieces of avocado encompassed and the bread one little piece for each half! I called them up and they said I had to bring the sandwich back which was kind of strange, usually when I experience that they apologize and offer some type of gift card. Anyway I spoke with the manager and eventually he issued a gift card, I never picked it up and never got my credit because he really initially seemed to have a problem with and I felt if it wasn't distributed based on sincerity I really didn't want it. Thereafter I continued to patronize the business and based on that experience I always look inside the sandwich it was the same thing giving the bare minimum amount of avocado just the vegetables but about 10% possibly less of avocado. I don't know I'm conflicted I love the sandwiches but I don't want to have to go to a restaurant where have to pull the bread apart to find out if I don't have a fair amount of avocado in a sandwich were it be dispersed throughout and a fair amount. Like I said every time thereafter as look in the sandwich every time is extremely short on avocado! Just left the restaurant and, for lack of better word, the service was terrible.

I asked the staff what their best sellers were, but the they just told me “I don’t know, we have a few” I was stunned but I just let it go because I thought maybe he was still new. After taking my order he asked if it was for dine in or to go, and I said dine in.

Lo and behold when my food came it was packed in a to go container, I thought maybe he misheard me so I went up to the front to ask for some plates and he asked the person in the back of the house if they were still handing out plates and the lady said no, we only do to go.

It was only 7:00 and the signs said that they were closing at 9:00. It’s a Saturday, and you’re telling me that you’re stopping dine in 2 hrs before you close? I even tipped them 15%. There was no apologies or any empathy from the workers.

It might seem like a small deal but I felt disrespected. Never coming back to this place. I hope you guys train your people in basic...
