The further a Torchy’s Tacos is from Texas the worse it gets.
I’ve been eating Torchy’s for almost 10 years; when I first encountered them, they were operating out of a food truck in Austin, TX, and over the last decade I’ve seen them expand across Texas, into Colorado, and I was surprised to see them reach so far as Indianapolis.
I’ve loved their food since I first tried it, and I will eat at Torchy’s any time I have the opportunity. I travel a lot for work, and find myself in or passing through Texas at least four times a year. In March I was in Houston for five days and I ate Torchy’s Tacos three days of out of the five I was there for.
Now, having had Torchy’s in Denver I expected it to be a little different. In Denver it wasn’t as flavorful and while it was still delicious it was kind of bland.
This Torchy’s was absolutely awful. Everything was dripping and glistening in oil. The taco of the month drained out at least tablespoons of oil. The Mofaux was also incredibly oily, which was concerning for a vegetarian taco. Tomatillo salsa was heavy and oily. The street corn, also oily, and the taste was off.
In addition to the onslaught of oil, the flavors were off. Everything was bland, relying mostly on the heavy oil for taste. The Diablo sauce, which I used to buy bottles of to take home when I wouldn’t be traveling near a Torchy’s for a while, was not spicy at all. I poured half a thing of it on one taco and was surprised I didn’t feel the burn in my mouth. Then I dipped a few chips into it and I still didn’t get a burn. Finally I licked it straight off the lid of the container and I sadly realized that the Diablo sauce wasn’t as spicy as it’s supposed to be.
Again, I ate Torchy’s three days in a row a month ago. I’ve eaten Torchy’s a few times a year every year for 10 years. This isn’t a 10 year nostalgic memory that didn’t hold up. This location just ruined one of my favorite...
Read moreMy sister and I finally decided to try torchy's out. We've had so many people recommend this place and say great things about it. I wish we could say the same but it was pretty average in our opinion. Walked in for the first time and the cashier took our orders but you could clearly tell we didn't know what we were doing and that we were first timers. It would have been nice if she would have asked if we wanted recommendations or told us how things worked. She was perfectly lovely and there was absolutely nothing wrong with her just maybe not super observant? She gave us a buzzer but didn't tell us if we were to go somewhere to turn it in for our food or if they brought it out to us. The buzzer was going off before I had even paid so I was very confused. Food took a little while coming out even though they weren't super busy. Ordered the chicken fajita taco? It was good and filling just very messy based on the oils dripping out of the ends. Almost felt like tacos were supposed to be eaten with forks. We love chips and salsa but the red salsa we got was in my opinion a bit disappointing. We love just a classic salsa and it would've been nice if that had been an option. Would also love more options to build your own taco. My sister who is vegetarian didn't have a lot of options especially since she's not a fan of impossible meat. I got a side of rice since it's my go to at any mexican restaurant and that was pretty good, although a small portion for the price. We've had plenty tell us the queso and guacamole are the way to go. Maybe next time!
Overall we are glad we went but we don't feel the need to go back or at least any time soon....
Read moreWe've eaten here several times since they opened and do enjoy it overall. Only real challenges keeping us from frequenting more often are that it's on the other side of the county from where we live and there's a good bit of construction always going on along the way, including immediately next door to the restaurant.
When you enter, you are essentially already in line to place your order at one of the registers. After placing your order, they give you a device to set on your table so they know where to bring your food, which they are extremely prompt to do. They do offer bar seating where there is table service in case you do not wish to go through the cash register lines, but that is not our preference after trying it once.
Favorite items include their guacamole (one of my favorite restaurant versions around) and of course their tacos [Fried Avocado, Salmon, Migas]. Their tacos tend to be priced anywhere from $3.50 for the breakfast-themed options to $6.50 for the more expensive proteins. They have non-taco items on the menu as well as a "secret" menu that includes 5 or so other larger/more expensive tacos.
They do have a loyalty club that emails taco-of-the-month info as well as special offers such as on your birthday. Only catch is that you have to remember to check in when you are ordering as you are not able to submit your visit for credit to your loyalty account after your visit if you forget (which has bitten us on most of...
