It's "The Vig"... in Flagstaff! Woo hoo! I liked this place a lot, having just recently purchased the Babbitt House as a 2nd home to our main house in downtown Phoenix... which is coincidentally about the same walking distance away from the "Fillmore Vig" (side note: a really popular restaurant with amazing food and amazingly warm-hearted service managed by Graeme Doyle, who puts together all of the components of food, service, ambiance - and cleanliness - perfectly). Once I learned this was the same group of people responsible for The Vig, I had to try it out and I love it and we'll continue coming back for sure. My only suggestion is there's a dish called the "Dump Truck" or something, and I just hate seeing the word "dump" on a menu, it is off-putting, perhaps just something psychological I have to get over. They have a version of 'poutine' that's great... but I'm not a gravy guy and would just LOVE to see two dishes branch out of this: 1) just good old fried cheese curds but with a Cholula based sauce (EDIT: they listened and added a tempura version, woo hoo, thanks guys!), and 2) just non-fried cheese curds with olives, fruit, nuts... these both would be a great non-meat alternative to wings... even though their wings are excellent. The mac-n-cheese is great, the pozole is amazing, the pad thai is amazing, the carnitas mole is amazing. So give it a try, you won't be disappointed, and if you have any feedback on anything, tell them, they'll listen and they'll make modifications over time. The place should be packed all the time, I think over time this will be a long-lasting part of the Flagstaff restaurant community. Great...
Read moreAt first glance this bar and kitchen appears to be a hip gastropub. It's not uncommon these days for an establishment like this to have good food paired with high gravity beers. However the preparation of food left a lot to be desired. My fiance had the steak frites and I ordered the salmon. The steak frites was listed as coming with chimichurri, fries, and an arugula and cotija cheese salad. For those who are unacquainted, chimichurri is traditionally a sauce made of chopped herbs, vinegar and olive oil. It is both tangy and salty and pairs incredibly well with a variety of meats. Their attempt at chimichurri appeared to be some chopped oregano, cilantro, and vinegar thrown on top of the arugula. If they intend this lackluster chimichurri to be a dressing for the salad, the menu should be worded differently. As for the salmon they didn't take a temperature when I ordered it and the quinoa it was paired with was under seasoned. Overall it seems like this food was heated and thrown on a plate with little care towards seasoning or flavor. Given that the steak was $19 and the salmon was $20 I think this place's popularity is based exclusively on its location and drinks. Tourist trap really. If you're looking for a drink it's probably a great place to hang out. The food quality just simply was not there...
Read moreOne of my favorite bars in the Flagstaff area has to be McMillan Bar and Kitchen! I visited this location with three other friends on New Years eve and it was very busy (holidays, very understandable). We were seated after 45 minutes which was not too bad and as a plus we got to dine in the cool, little arcade room.
We had an awesome waitress who was very friendly and made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and a bowl of Mac & Cheese (with bacon) to share for the table. The sandwich was good but everyone at the table couldn't stop eating the Mac & Cheese! Using the excuse, "Go big or go home," we were even dipping our fries into the mac n cheese. It has to be one of THE BEST MAC & CHEESES each of us has ever had! I would definitely want to try other things when I go back, but it would be so hard to pass up that Mac & Cheese.
It doesn't stop there! A very pleasant surprise was also the dessert: the Tres Leches Cake. Some of us were even skeptical at the table but in the end it was the best dessert. It was the perfect amount of sweet! I'm so glad I finished an amazing year at this amazing location! The food, the atmosphere, classic arcade games and service was top-notch!
