This Saturday 2/15, I went to dinner with my husband here and got sat at 7:30 at the bar. Needless to say, our experience has left us with a bad taste in our mouths. It was less than pleasant. First, the bartender got to us and didn't introduce himself or anything and just rudely stated, "what do you want to drink". My husband asked if they had an Orien which is a type of Japanese beer and the bartender deadpans, "no" and didn't offer any recommendations. My husband took a look back at the drink menu and the bartender goes, "take your time" and abruptly left to do something else. After about 20 minuets, he comes and takes our order and my husband ended up getting some other beer. We ordered our food which was the pork gyouza, two kinds of sushi and fried rice. When I ordered my friend rice, the bartender goes, "soup or house salad" again, blunt and rudely. He did not say anything to us when we were done ordering and turned around to put our food in. My husband and I were very confused with the bartender's attitude and hostility. When he was done putting our food in, the bartender slammed his note pad on the bar and went off to do something.
When he comes back, he takes the order of the people next to us and was still not pleasant but much more kind than our service. He was recommending them items and waiting for their orders; a complete 180 from our experience. The bartender continues to slam his notepad, empty cups and the clover POS system around at the bar, clearly annoyed and overwhelmed. Another couple asked about their food which I overheard was a misunderstanding and supposed to be for to-go. I do not know what was said before but everyone in the bar loudly heard the bartender tell these guests that, "I've been in the industry for 18 years and I could care less if people tip me or not". Talk about wonderful service and attitude. Obviously, it should be "couldn't care less" because he clearly does care to warrant this nasty attitude to paying customers. My fried rice and gyouza came around 8:15 and the gyouza was lukewarm at best. My fried rice was good, but my husband did not get his sushi. The people next to us got their food and their sushi before my husband even after they ordered after us. Around 25 mins later, (8:40). The bartender asked if I wanted a box for my rice. I told him my husband hasn't even gotten his sushi yet. He didn't say anything and just walked away and came back with the sushi. My husband asked for another beer and he gave him the "light" version of the beer. My husband didn't want to even bother to ask for the right one because we would have been met with terrible attitude.
Another couple by the wall of the bar were waiting to check out. The bartender rudely placed the clover POS system in front of them and walked away. The couple was giving looks to all of us because everyone here was met with this distasteful service from the bartender. We did not check out until a little after 9. Needless to say, I am never coming back to Karma Sushi again. To the bartender that was work at this time that Saturday with the shaved sides of your head, and black and white nail polish, shame on your for your terrible service. I completely understand being overwhelmed if it's busy, the kitchen is backed up or if getting sat to close together in rotation, but that should not reflect how your treat your customers. I feel like you should have learned how to treat people at such a young age, especially going into the service industry you claim to have been in for so long.
As I'm writing this the next day, my husband has had to go to Urgent Care for a bad case of food poisoning. Eat here at...
Read moreMy family and I have been to Karma Sushi on multiple occasions and always been very impressed and satisfied. They have recently introduced a new menu. The previous menu had quite a few gluten-free options and this new menu doesn't seem to have nearly as many. In fact, one of the items is marked gluten free but was tempura fried which is not gluten free. Our server said that he could have that made gluten free anyways but when the roll came out it was still deep fried in tempura. That was order mistake #1 for our evening. We put in our order and our food started coming out. It did not come out all at one time which is to be expected with a place that has a sushi bar but my son and my husband were done eating before my daughter and I even got our sushi rolls. Mistake #2 for the evening happened when they brought us the completely wrong roll for my daughter and even though our server knew it was the wrong roll (even presented it as a spicy tuna roll when we ordered a tekka maki-thin role), he tried to play it off like it was the right one before I corrected him. While our server was nice, he was not great as a server. He definitely struggled with getting our order correct, did not try terribly hard to make sure everything was made right, we were offered no compense for any of the mistakes and we had to ask three times for a to-go container. We finally asked the hostess because our server never got us one (we even watched him walk by the to to go containers several times). It took 15 minutes after asking for our check to actually get it. We are a very low key group and tend to give lots of grace but in this situation I could not in good conscience, even leave our server a tip more than 17%. Overall, the experience was underwhelming and frustrating. We may give Karma Sushi another try just because we previously have had good experiences but if this is any indication of what we can expect of their new space and menu, one shot is...
Read moreI’m not local to the area, but a trusty family member whose judgement I trust guided lunch to this location. Karma is located in Flagstaff’s little cluster of joints but is by no means secluded. Seating for seven people is obviously a larger party than average, but the waiters were so kind and accommodating! Once we were seated, the first thing to catch everyone’s eyes was the combo: a ramen and a given dish for $20, every day from 11-3pm. Our orders were taken care of in a timely, amiable manner—the service was definitely super sweet, but that’s something I’ve noticed throughout Arizona restaurants anyways, especially among younger staff. Food came out and everything was as expected. The ramen had a good hearty broth with a good cacophony of toppings: naruto, chashu, mushrooms—the whole, typical, works. The noodles were a bit over cooked, but the restaurant was pretty flooded. The karaage was good—it was flat breaded and served with spicy mayo. The fish—sushi, sashimi, and nigiri were ordered—were not extremely fresh, but they were obviously well prepared. The fried rice was pretty decent too, about the quality I’d expect from a tiny, family owned, Chinatown located restaurant. Ginger and wasabi are served upon request and were both of good quality. All of the food was a bit salty, but we also come from a distinctly Asian household. Again, the staff was incredibly sweet! And the ambiance was really cool and chill :) Would come here...
