We were excited to stay at the Motel DuBeau Travelers Inn in Flagstaff since we enjoy staying in refurbished vintage boutique motels. Staying at Motel DuBeau was mostly positive, but didn't quite live up to our expectations. Granted, our expectations may be a tad too high, but we have stayed in similar facilities that have wowed us more than Motel DuBeau.
First, let's talk about the positive things. This motel is located in a fantastic location. It is just a block away from Flagstaff's historic downtown, and we were able to walk to our dining destination, taking a few pictures along the way. Second, the motel staff are very friendly and helpful. We engaged with three different staff members and they could not have been more helpful. Third, the motel offers full access to the kitchen and laundry facilities. Yes, you can actually use real cookware to cook on a real stove to prepare a meal. Pretty cool! Fourth, the lobby and exterior of the motel looks charming and welcoming and reminds one of bygone eras.
So, the positives are very strong. But there were also a few drawbacks that kept me from giving the motel five full stars. And really, it all comes down to our room. We were in the king room, a larger room that includes a very comfortable king sized bed and very nice large screen TV. It also had a very nice working desk and strong WiFi. But the room featured a faux leather couch that was too big for the area and was not all that comfortable. The bathroom had plenty of hot water, but the pressure was lacking, the shower head a little flimsy, a slow draining sink, and absolutely no counter space to place things. When it was time for us to go to bed, we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to work the climate control, but never could figure it out.
But don't get me wrong. The overall experience was good. But for the price of a night's stay, it should have been a little better. The basic things I look for in a hotel room were not quite as they should be.
And truthfully, my rating is marked from five to four stars based entirely on our room experience. Perhaps the other rooms don't suffer the same drawbacks that ours did. All in all, we had a very nice night's sleep on a comfortable bed and were treated well by the staff. That's what we really needed the most and the Motel...

After Vegas, we decided to stay in Flagstaff (while visiting the Grand Canyon for 2 days) because all of the hotels closer to the canyon are around $200 and up. This one was a little steep for a hotel ($62), but cheap compared to others within a 80 mile radius. (We drove 1.5 hours each way to get the Grand Canyon, I suggest just paying the extra cost for a hotel in Williams or in GC in you can afford it. Although an hour north of Flagstaff are some great native american giftshops with souveniers.)
Anyways, about the hotel: we arrived at 10pm at night and was given a room #1 on the end which was great because we didn't want to disturb other visitors by unloading our car. It was a old small room, but good enough to leave luggage and sleep a couple needs. Seemed clean enough for it's age.
Pros: You get to park right IN FRONT of your door! Cute property with flowers at door and vintage car parking out front. Small breakfast but better than other hotels I have stayed it. (Pastries, fruit, oatmeal, and coffee) Free wifi and lots of TV channels Kitchen and living room available for use in main building 24 hours a day Within walking distance from several bars, coffee shops, and a brewery Comfy bed Friendly Staff
Cons:
Sadly the curtains in the room are also transparent white. People can see through if they really try. Sun comes up at like 5am and these curtains do not block out any of the light from the street or sun so make sure to bring an eye-cover! No AC in the room, but usually stays cool enough to use fan and open windows. Heat is available for winter. Right near bars and coffee shops that stay open late, so you hear drunk people talking loud, walking by, lots of motorcycles driving by, as well as the train trains a road over. Hot water in shower takes 10 min to warm up. Shower head didn't let out too much water and sprayed everywhere. Needs some CLR treatment! No deadbolt lock on door for security. The table lamps next to the bed did not work when we were there. Staff will come into your room during the day and open the window to let air flow through, which was great, but allows easy break in since we left all of our belongings in the room while at the...
Read moreDue to arrive at night into Flagstaff on Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, I researched motels in easy walking distance of the train station. ||I am so glad I learned about Motel DuBeau! Its website, and assorted reviews, indicated that this place— which reminded me of childhood road trips in the 1950s and 60s— would be good. The reality was better than expected ||Traveling solo, room 18 was perfect! The room decor is in warm southwest gold-hued colors. Everything in this clean, cozy room conveyed warmth, comfort and coziness. On a cold night, the heat was perfect.||After a comfortable sleep (great mattress!), I went for breakfast to the lobby /dining area. There are assorted goodies and delicious fresh-brewed coffee. If you’d like a bit more food, I highly recommend excellent bagels at Biffs Bagels across the street for lunch or late breakfast. There’s also a place around the corner for espresso drinks, etc. ||The motel’s location is excellent for wandering the interesting streets near the motel, going to the train station tourist center and gift shop, crossing Route 66 to the downtown area. I loved learning the history of both the town and the motel.||There’s a big kitchen and laundry room available for guests||Some reviews mention train noise. I didn’t hear it, but just in case…there’s a container of earplugs available in the lobby. ||NB: The office closed between 12-4 pm .||I arrived late, after office hours, and the key and room information was exactly where the staff, via phone and email, said it would be. It was another lovely touch to find a beautifully handwritten welcome note in the envelope with the key.||Thanks to staff who patiently assisted me on phone calls before arrival, to the housekeeping staff who provided an immaculately clean room, to the owners’ son and his wife, Brittany, who were helpful and welcoming, and especially to the owners who restored and maintain this place of Flagstaff and American lodging history.||I hope the attached photos convey better than words, the “feeling” of...
