I've gotten away from leaving reviews yet I after a noteworthy St Patrick's Day Reuben special I feel inclined to share that if you haven't been to this location lately due to the food quality, which admittedly was abysmal a few years ago, try again.
I'd stopped eating here a few years ago because of the quality yet it's been a180° correction toward delicious!!! The new chef Christina and professional management by Dion coupled with many stellar staff {shout out to Trent and Tyler} make this a local's favorite again.
I live nearby and wander over time to time for nearly a decade now. Lots of happy people for karaoke on Wednesdays, diverse live entertainment most days. Clean restrooms.
Really, especially for locals I'm sending this review to say, give it a try (again).
My 4 stars on review is simply because the prices aren't warranted given the lack of water view ... Compared to other AJs locations. The Bayou location is my favorite yet it's quite a drive for me. The Shanty Okaloosa Island, it's still a nicely appointed nostalgic, gulfside decor though and especially the evening lighting on patio is sublime. Nevertheless, my only complaint is it's a bit pricey given the views.
If you stop coming here because of the food quality, try again. They've really turned things around ... This review given in the year 2025.
Oh, as a. Aside, dog friendly on patio which is a plus if you've got a furry pal.or need some dog love 💕 ... Great place. Glad to be local to it yet also enjoy the diverse tourist crowds; always somebody interesting to learn with and from visiting our...
Read moreIt's a really great place for a quick snack (which I'm fond of doing on my lunch break), a full meal, meeting with friends for a drink, or joining in on karaoke night for some fun. I remember when AJ's bought the old Fudpuckers, and the work that was done to fix up the restaurant, bar area and deck area(s). It's looking really nice compared to when AJ's took over the property. As for the patrons, it's a mixed crowd of different ages and demographics — from little kids w/their families, retirees, locals, tourists, active duty military & military veterans, businesspeople, "white collar", "blue collar", "snowbirds", college students — and everything in-between. The staff has always been friendly, helpful, attentive and positive attitude. The food has always been great and there is something for everyone on the menu options. (Maybe I'm a little biased because I've lived in the area for over 24 years and I prefer to goto locally owned restaurants.) As for a particular server or bartender, I would say my favorite is Jenn. There's a few others, but Jenn is the utmost best one! She started off working as a bartender, but I've watched her work as a host, a server and a manager. Her friendly, caring attitude, plus her ability to remember her "regulars" to the restaurant is impressive to me. As I stated, there are others who are just as amazing there. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant whether you're visiting the area for a few days, on your way driving through the area, or a local such as...
Read moreOn Sunday, August 27, my companions and I were excited to visit AJ's Oyster Shanty, unfortunately, our visit took a disappointing turn when we encountered an unpleasant bartender at the outside bar. As we arrived at the deck of AJ's Oyster Shanty around 9:45pm (they close at 11pm on Sunday) we were eager to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. However, our excitement quickly waned when the bartender informed us that the kitchen was already closed. I told the bartender that we were not seeking a meal but only drinks, we were taken aback when the bartender callously told us that the last call had already been made.
The indifferent attitude displayed by the bartender was disheartening. It was clear that she lacked training in accommodating customers' needs and failed to grasp the importance of providing a pleasant experience. Despite AJ's Oyster Shanty being known for exceptional service, our encounter with the bartender left us feeling unwelcome.
She could have suggested other areas of the establishment where we could still enjoy the live music, she curtly directed us to a pizza place down the street, further adding to our disappointment.
To avoid similar situations in the future, AJ's Oyster Shanty needs to invest in staff training and recruit individuals who will enhance the overall customer experience. By prioritizing customer care, the restaurant can maintain its reputation as a vibrant and enjoyable destination for live music...
