I ordered two large pizzas, one pepperoni the other the 5th element (supreme). I tried out this restaurant because of the high reviews and scratch statements. Yet, like so many other places the pizza was completely unremarkable. The crust was so thin that it should have been called thin crust instead of New York style. This is because while New York style is thin, it is not as thin as other thin pizzas and should have some ability to hold itself up at least half way to the end. Instead, this pizza is so thin that it has no body to it at all. The flavor in the crust was completely absent. Obviously they must not be using any olive oil in the crust. There was no flavor to the dough, which means that it most certainly wasn't a long fermentation. I think they even used basic all purpose flour instead of bread flour. The dough was as tasteless as can be.
The sauce was another missed point to one of the people who tried it. While it wasn't covered in sauce and a pizza should not be dripping with sauce, that sauce needs to have a good flavor. Here, it doesn't have much flavor at all. Italy purists believe that only tomatoes and no seasoning should be used for pizza sauce. But that is only possible when you are using particular kinds of tomatoes with a lot of inherent flavor grown in volcanic soils. Here it tasted like canned tomato paste without much seasoning, thus showing a lack of knowledge about sauce and flavor.
The cheese clearly tasted as if it had too much cheddar cheese in it and it completely overwhelmed any hint of mozzarella. I could taste no provolone or any other kind of cheese other than cheddar because they must of used too much sharp cheddar cheese. Maybe they ran out of mozzarella and hoped that none of us would notice. While Peter Reinhardt states that cheddar is a great addition to mozzarella on pizza, clearly this restaurant doesn't understand what a hint of flavor means.
In the end we have another twenty dollar pizza place that clearly isn't worth it and doesn't actually understand pizza. Like all the other fly by night places before it, they just toss stuff together hoping for the best, charging the most, and put all their hopes in the toppings to save the day. I don't understand why so many people start restaurants and charge a lot of money when they clearly don't know what...
Read moreour store recently relocated to the plaza and had my first experience ordering from Piper's a month ago. My coworker and I decided to try their 5th Element pizza, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The sauce was exceptional and lived up to—or perhaps exceeded—the positive reviews I had encountered. Notably, the toppings were generous, featuring an ample amount of pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. The pizza was so delicious that I felt compelled to order another one for my family to enjoy at home.
Today, I opted for the chicken bacon ranch pizza and garlic knots. After my first bite, I knew I had to share my experience. The pizza was not only visually appealing but also packed with flavor in every bite. I must commend their garlic knots as well; it is evident that they use real garlic rather than the minced variety from a jar commonly found in other establishments.
Every time I visit the restaurant to collect my order, I am welcomed by the smiling faces of the staff, which enhances the overall experience. Ordering over the phone has also been consistently pleasant, and I’ve noted that the restaurant maintains a clean and organized environment. Having grown up in New York, I believe Piper's offers a pizza experience that is reminiscent of authentic New York-style pizza. I eagerly look forward to my next order...
Read moreFantastic pizza place tucked away in a shopping center. This has to be the best pizza value in the Tampa Bay Area. For prices pretty similar to the cost-cut chain stores that keep getting more miserly on toppings, you can have fresh, gourmet-quality food. I went last weekend and had garlic knots, cinnamon knots, and a pizza. The crust is great, these guys are hand stretching the dough made fresh everyday. Today I got a calzone and it is a huge value. You get a folded over pizza size calzone with a hearty amount of your toppings and generous ricotta and mozzarella cheese. Overall you are getting a lot of very fresh ingredients and real cheese. It is worth a drive over and they have indoor tables and outdoor tables so you can eat the hot pizza after your drive. Call ahead and they will take good care of you. I keep going back. This week I got the deep dish. It really highlights the contrast of a crispy crunchy exterior with a chewy interior. The pepperoni really contrasts well with the crust and other ingredients. I keep going back, I also got the Philly cheesesteak. The steak was really high quality and they make a really satisfying combination of meat, cheeses, and the...
