Surfside is a must for me when I'm in town and I'd love to tell you why. But first, let's start with the why nots: It's not the food (even though it is pretty good, especially after you've had a few drinks), it's not the music (even though it is usually a bop-fest comprised of banger after banger), it's not the drinks (even though their PBRs taste like God herself poured them into her hands for you to lap up like the happiest dog to ever live), nor is it Wednesday night karaoke (even though karaoke is maybe one of three things keeping me going in this simulation we call life). So, what is it, you ask? It's one of the best bartenders on both sides of the Mississippi, which I can say given my residency history: Marti.
Marti is so wildly kind and considerate, always greeting me and everyone else with such a warm smile and even a willing ear when needed; they are more attentive than an eager-to-please labrador, constantly buzzing around the bar so that no one has to wait or want for too long; and they are funny to boot - what more could you ask for in a bartender and person? No tea, no shade, no pink lemonade to any of the other employees at this fine establishment, but I'd be lying if I said the atmosphere is the same when Marti is away.
TL;DR: If you are thinking of going to Surfside, I highly recommend and sincerely hope you are lucky enough to be blessed with Marti's presence while there. I promise that you will emerge a better person after making their...
Read moreI’ve been to this place several times over the past 8 years, and have always enjoyed being there until my recent experience on Wednesday night. They hosted their “shit show Karaoke” night which was exactly what it means in the worst way possible. Cameron was great, and charming, and a good listener. His timing was also appreciated and he was patient as well while we ordered our drinks. I should have left after I had a conversation with the DJ and he told us that we couldn’t actually sing because the queue was already full. It was around 11pm and there were not that many people to accommodate, so maybe they should try a new karaoke system, unless everyone is satisfied with the “shit show” vibe. What really irked me and inspired this review was the blonde bartender working beside Cameron that night. She was blatantly rude, crass, and unpleasant to deal with. It was to a point that while 4 people were at the bar sitting, I wanted to make sure I closed out and tried to get her attention by saying “excuse me” at a reasonable level. I was not shouting, and when she finally acknowledged me after 10 minutes of waiting, she accused me of slapping the bar to get her attention which I had not done. My cousin, and friends, and even strangers verified this. I was glad that we were already on our way out, and extremely disappointed that such a cute and fun place would have such unpleasant...
Read moreSurfside used to be one of our favorite spots to hang out, listen to music and get drinks. They've since hired a 'bouncer' who is disrespectful and honestly down right scary. He began an altercation with a group sitting in a booth and lost his cool, immediately, screaming at them and getting in their face demanding they leave. He then followed two of the girls from the group an entire block down the street. He continued to be aggressive to individuals, especially when closing time came. A drink had spilled on me while cleaning up the table, he grabbed my drink out of my hand, told me I was stealing and again became aggressive, going nose to nose with my boyfriend as he was trying to get me napkins. This 'bouncer' was seen chugging alcoholic beverages all night, which just added to his aggressive behavior. I will not be returning to Surfside as long as he is employed. It's a sad day when someone ruins one of your favorite spots. Be better, hire better and know who you're hiring to represent your company, especially someone hired as a 'bouncer' and should be maintaining the security of the...
