Fort Lauderdale seems to offer a pretty great seafood selection and given the reviews of this restaurant I was excited to give Sushi Rock a try. We came here to try out their lunch menu offerings. I absolutely sushi and eat it on a weekly basis.
Upon arrival, we were the only guests at 1pm. This worried me a little but the restaurant was indeed small so I figured it wasn't a big deal. The restaurant is extremely dark and it's very hard to see what you are eating. This seems intentional since it was day time outside and very little natural light is let into the restaurant. I suppose this might go along with their "rock" theme as there are old vinyl album covers posted along the wall. They also play classic oldies rock music which was fun and at least entertaining. As our meal went on a few more patrons came by.
I ordered the sashimi/sushi/tempura entree and my husband ordered the sashimi/sushi/steak teriyaki entree. You get a choice of either a soup or a salad. We ordered the salad with ginger dressing. The salad is quite large but, unfortunately, the dressing was not right. I think it is a house made dressing but the texture was thick and lumpy and tasted completely like soy sauce more than anything else; also super overly salty. Disappointing.
The food (see photos) came out well presented and in pleasantly fairly decent quantities. I did not expect each entree to be served more like a bento box. I'll start with the fact that you get three large pieces of vegetable tempura and two decent sized shrimp tempura. These came out super hot and fresh and was probably the best part of the entire meal. It kinda went downhill from there.
The meal came with a half of a California roll which I typically don't enjoy but it was actually the best part if the "sushi" portion of my meal. The cuts of sashimi did not seem very fresh and perhaps cut incorrectly as most of my tuna and white fish pieces had tendons and were hard to chew. I actually spit out two pieces of my sashimi and did not eat the rest of it. The sushi pieces were ok but still cut from the same unsatisfying pieces of fish as the sashimi so I just couldn't enjoy it. My husband's steak teriyaki was teeny tiny in portion which wouldn't normally be a big deal considering it's lunch but it lacked salt and flavor. It tasted like it was boiled and then teriyaki sauce poured over it.
I felt pretty full finishing off the tempura or I would have left still pretty hungry. I really wanted to love my meal but I...
Read moreSushi Rock in Las Olas, Fort Lauderdale, is a hidden gem that truly lives up to its name. We arrived early and had the entire restaurant to ourselves, which made the experience even more personal and enjoyable. The atmosphere is vibrant, with a fun rock ’n’ roll theme and good music playing in the background—it feels like a perfect fusion of sushi bar and rock lounge.
We started with the crispy rice with spicy tuna, the perfect appetizer—crispy, flavorful, and satisfying. We also had the Great Balls of Fire, which came with a wasabi kick that was tolerable but strong enough to make us laugh at each other’s reactions.
For rolls, we ordered the Snoop Dog, Blondie, Salmon Chicharrón, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Big Blooper, and Black Widow. All were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented in a sushi boat, making the experience feel even more special.
A standout detail was the fresh chopped wasabi—not the typical paste you see everywhere, but real wasabi with a clean, vibrant spice. It wasn’t overpowering; instead, it added the perfect kick to wake up your taste buds and complement every bite.
To pair with our meal, we tried the Lychee Saketini—a refreshing, slightly sweet cocktail with a delicate floral aroma and the smooth finish of sake. It was crisp, light, and balanced, making it the perfect drink to enjoy with sushi.
This little hole-in-the-wall spot easily has some of the best sushi I’ve ever had in Fort Lauderdale. Between the creative rolls, fresh ingredients, fun drinks, and rock ’n’ roll vibe, Sushi Rock is a must-visit...
Read moreWe used to really enjoy going to this place, it was one of our local sushi spots. We kept in rotation, but after the last time, definitely avoiding this place. Plenty of other great spots without deceitful practices. I asked for wasabi and the hostess/waitress (and i believe manager) asked me wasabi paste or fresh wasabi? I looked at her quizzically, never been posed the question before and said fresh wasabi. The check comes and we’re charged $3.50 for it-we brought it to her attention and she absolutely refused to remove it. She never mentioned there was an extra charge and she knew that I thought it was one and the same. It was clear from her behavior and demeanor this is not the first time she’s pull this before. I understand it’s a nominal amount but based how intentionally and blatantly deceitful she was, we will not return. they also increased their prices recently and quite honestly for what you’re getting it’s really not worth it. Also, the rules always take a while to make even when you’re the only one in the restaurant. We put up with the slow service because it used to be reasonable priced for decent sushi and easily accessible but it’s just...
