I was walking down an empty apocalyptic looking International Drive in Orlando today, on July 4th and really missing my hometown barbecue. It was sad to see empty hotel parking lots, no crowds jostling and laughing, but determined to find a restaurant that wasn't going to serve me some old and sad food, I decided to stop at every location I passed.
I stumbled upon a cute Floridian looking place called Nantucket Shrimp Shack, and I hoped to snag a po-boy for under $10 (struggle week for me). I go in and the owner who was this skinny little cutesy young guy, steps from behind the counter to greet me. I check out the new paper menu and ordered 1/2 dozen jumbo shrimp and hush-puppies. As I looked around, I noticed what all indoor restaurants are doing: reduced seating. The place was non-pretentious and had a welcoming vibe. Wooden tables with a high-gloss veneer and 20-foot-tall ceilings. The. decor leaves much to be desired, but the happiness of the employees was worth much more than any velvet seats and leather table tops,
My food arrived good and hot in my to-go plate. I decided to stay and eat, so I sat at one of several unfortunately empty tables. I opened my container, and to my surprise, I had garlic shrimp aoli. I thought my order would be "fried" shrimp, otherwise, I would have ordered a different side. That shrimp was beautiful and I decided to just go with it, and man oh man I am so glad I did!The chef was able to get a garlic butter coating with parsley all over my shrimp. That first bite made my liver quiver. If that owner was about 20 years older, I would have taken him home with me (lol). The hush-puppies had an amazing crust on the exterior and a moist center with ZERO grease on the inside.
The meal was less than $10 and I was full and extremely happy. This is definitely an all-around place to eat. Want to bring the family for a great fish lunch or dinner? They are the place! Been out drinking and need to soak up some of that alcohol? This is the place when hours go back to normal. They currently close at 9 PM due to corona. A 4.5 stars out of 400+ reviews are there for a reason, and I totally agree. I gave them extra points because the owners were still happy even though, I'm sure, they are losing thousands of dollars a night in business due to the lack of tourists. Hey guys, I'll definitely...
Read moreI'm giving 2 stars because I really think they just had a bad night and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt being I used a 3rd Party to order...But I was VERY displeased with the way my situation was handled. This place was recommended by a couple at the resort I was at and I am 9 months pregnant was craving seafood. I used Door dash Around 6:30 to order 3 things; Shrimp Alfredo, boom Shrimp and coleslaw. I was notified by the app to be there at 7:15, I got there at. 7:30 and my food wasn't ready. There was a young woman who said she'd check on it...and she did...but only told me she was sorry and it would be a little longer. At 8:00 I started to get a bit antsy being my kids were waiting and I am pregnant, starving and I'm barely clothed because we went straight from a water park all day to picking up food . I expressed that my kids were waiting and could I at least have an estimate of when it would be done... the young lady from before kindly told me once more she had no idea how much longer... I asked the young woman again, she said she'd check and didn't even go into the kitchen...she just went to her table guests (which I understand..she's busy and not at fault)...so now it's almost 8:30 and am still standing at the bar. I asked another waiter if he was the manager and he said No... But then KEPT WALKING. so I politely asked him to stop and please explain to me what was going on or who I needed to talk to about a possible refund, he just pointed to the back and said I would have to call door dash and "I'm just a waiter, talk to him"..the man he pointed at walked right past me and went on to cleaning up something...so I assumed that couldn't be the manager....but IT WAS ...so I explained to him I had been standing there for an hour and put in my order about 2 hours ago. when the "manager" went in the back kitchen I just left. I was very upset and I don't understand how nobody could tell me what was going on. It just felt weird and uncomfortable. I don't know if it's because I looked like sh*t and was in my dirty water park clothes or if everyone was just that out of wack ...but even so that's no way to leave a customer, especially one who paid in advance...
Read moreWe were looking for a seafood place near the Universal Endless Summer Resort and we read numerous reviews for the Nantucket Shrimp Shack and decided to give it a try. We came in about a half hour before closing time and we are glad we did.
The menu offers a great variety. We had the fried calamari as an appetizer and it was spot on great. I went with the Boom Boom shrimp which I would highly recommend. Great coating and spicy sauce made those shrimp sing.
Now when you go to place that fries food you never know what you'll get and how often they change the grease, especially at a fish place. Well I will tell you you got none of that greasy taste you get sometimes at a fry foods restaurant (which means he's changing out the oil regularly) and the shrimp, coating and sauces were terrific. Others in our group had the fish and chips, sauteed shrimp, hush puppies, corn on the cob and home made mac 'n cheese. The shrimp were big and the portions were large on each dish as well.
Every one of the above dishes were awesome and YES the mac 'n cheese and hush puppies both are to die for.
Jim, the owner who we met was great. He's a younger guy with old school restaurant manners which is tough to find these days. I ain't a 'Boomer' but I still appreciate good service at a restaurant where you're treated like a person and not like a number. Jim made suggestions when asked, made sure our orders were right, delivered it to our table, filled our sodas, checked on us and made sure we had to go containers.
Jim is knocking it out of the park here folks and I wish him continued success. Some of the best service and food we had in Orlando and we wish he'd open a place in Nashville.
When we come back to Orlando, we will be back to visit Nantucket Shrimp Shack. Check it out today, you'll be...
