Best pizza in Fredericksburg, and the surrounding counties. When we moved here from near Philly, it was shocking how bad the pizza options were, all over Northern VA: crusts thicker than a slice of bread, sauce as sweet as candy, XL the size of a northerner's M, half the slice as crust; it's an endless list of pizza crimes.
Benny's though, different story (finally). This place is 110% legit. Good thin crust with some crunch, pitch perfect sauce flavor and amount, good cheese and good cheese volume; sort of a Sicilian style but not droopy. Pepperoni and sausage always on tap along with a weird eclectic topping list that changes every month (at time of writing, one option is Three Little Pigs: teeny crispy pepperonis, bacon, and fine-dice ham). Cheap gigantic slices: 14 inches (from a 28 inch pie that's so big that they have a doublewide door to get it outside) $5 plain, $6 with anything/everything. A $5 slice and a $1 drink is a good meal even for a big guy like me, which makes Benny's a really cheap option on the "where do we eat" calculus. They have a good and decent priced beer/soda/tea selection (regular sodas, Joe Tea, Blenheim ginger ale, Dogfish Head, Hardywood, New Belgium, Founders, Bold Rock, etc along with PBR and Bud). If you've never had Blenheim but you like strong ginger like Reed's then you're in for a treat. This is the only place I can find it in the area. Finally, it's good people runnin' the joint. It's smiles everywhere, problems have solutions, and the music is all over the place but always real good. They are also open pretty late: 11 pm normally and 2 am(!) on Friday...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFair warning, downtown parking on the weekend is abysmal.
I came here with my wife, 3 kids, and in-laws. When we had arrived the line was already reaching the door. The line moves a little slow, It was 10-15 minutes to order. I can only assume that they only take a few orders at a time and get them out before accepting more. There's only about 4 tables with bench seating, seating at the bar, and two bar tops at the windows at the front of the store.
It took about 10 minutes to get our pizzas. I'm not sure if there's anything they can really do to speed up ordering or baking the pizzas. The store is just so small, you can't really fit in any more staff or equipment. The slices of pizzas were great, no problems with them. The interesting thing is the pizzas were so hot, that the serrations of the plastic knife and the tines of the plastic fork would bend due to the heat. I've never seen or used the plastic-ware they have before so maybe the plastic used has a low operating temperature than the clear or white plastic-ware most people are used to using.
TLDR: Pizza is great. Service is slow, though I can't blame staff. Would buy again for take-out, but not...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAlways delicious. Pizza gets 5 stars. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because it's so yummy it's popular=always pretty busy and crowded. Don't EXPECT to get to eat in/ sit down (again, yummy+popular+small space=odds of getting a table or even a bar stool quite small). In such a confined area, I'd suggest families (ESPECIALLY with small kids) order takeout. It's fine for date night since there's better chances for a pair of bar stools. The outdoor seating is nice when weather permits. I will commend them in that despite typically being fairly busy/packed- they really are quite speedy. Typically you can get a slice almost instantly (which realistically is plenty for a standard adult serving because it's gigantic). Generally, food is ready in under 10 minutes or less. ONCE, we waited about 15 minutes.... but it was standing room only, extremely busy. If you (want anything more than a couple slices) call ahead/on your way and you could easily eliminate any wait time. Whole pizzas can be quite pricey but it can also feed quite a few adults (3-6). Delicious! Larger space would be...
