My wife and I are recently visited this restaurant as we were on our business trip. I saw that this restaurant had some good reviews. As we like sushi and ramen, and have been to some great sushi and ramen shops, as well as some bad ones. We thought we would give Toshiko a shot.
When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by the server and was told to sit where we liked. After we seated, the server came over and asked if we wanted any drinks and appetizers. My wife politely asked "we haven't gotten the menu yet?" That's when the server said that the menu is online and pointed at a QR code. However, she could provide us with physical copies. Personally, I dislike online menu systems when it requires the customers to use their own devices. Add it to the fact that sushi and ramen shops are usually family owned and provide more customer orientated experiences, it was shocked at this disconnection.
It was a hot day at 108° in Fresno and we came in sweating, so we decided to start off with glasses of ice water and a plate of sushi. Ramen was ordered for the main course. While we were waiting and cooling off with the water, both the wife and I started realizing how ridiculously warm and humid the dining area was. I began sweating again after finishing my water. I would say the A/C was probably programmed to turn on after it reached 80° and wasn't setup to take into account humidity. That to me is poor management as there was no reason to have an A/C programmed so high when the dining room area and kitchen are sharing the same space without any fans to circulate the air.
When we got the sushi, we were impressed at the presentation. Though we were disappointed at how little Mayonaizu and eel sauce was used. Usually, sushi restaurants will have the sauces drizzled on the sushi and on the plate so the customer can add more to the sushi if they want. Here, it was only lightly drizzled on the sushi and nothing on the plate. With that being said though, the sushi was good and tasty.
After we finished the sushi, we received our Raman orders. I ordered the Tonkatsu ramen which the soup base was good but the ramen was overcooked. My wife's ramen soup base came out too salty for her taste and her noodles were overcooked as well.
Overall though, the place would not be a bad place to eat if they didn't do so much cost cutting. I would recommend this place for it's sushi and tell people to avoid their ramen. There is no reason for ramen to be overcooked. Or maybe they are not making their own ramen from scratch, which in that case I would begin...
Read moreWent here for the first time with my lady and there's definitely a number of things to improve on. Today they were understaffed and I do not hold that against them at all because they were still very sweet and the hospitality was there and l've been there in the position of being short staffed before. I ordered the Curry Katsu Ramen and we waited about 35 minutes until our food came out. Again that is fine because they were short staffed that is not something to hold against a business because it is out of their control. The thing that really bothered me is that I ordered the Curry Katsu Ramen but overheard our waitress and chef discussing behind the counter that they were out (or weren't able to) do the curry ramen. To which our waitress responded "just put shio broth instead" to my expectation, when my ramen came out it was the curry katsu ramen but with shio broth. Which is 100% different than the ramen that I ordered. I really really would ve appreciated if they had just been transparent with me instead of giving me something completely different than what l ordered and expected me not to notice. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to stress the workers out more than they were because again, I understand it is stressful being short staffed. But say if I was a customer who could've been allergic to something, yet you serve them something they didn't order. That is a lawsuit against the business and that's just a not smart decision. I would've much rather had a 20 second conversation letting me know they were out or something instead of being served something that in all honesty, respectfully was one of the worst bowls of ramen I've ever had. Once again I don't hold the fact of them being short staffed against them. But the decision of not even letting me know they were unable to provide something and instead serving me something that they thought I wouldn't know the difference of. Please don't base this review off their entire business because the staff was very kind and the Golden Roll my fiancé ordered was one of the very best sushi rolls l've ever had in my experience of other sushi restaurants. Please take this as constructive criticism not as hate. Lots of love, my...
Read moreWanted to try a new restaurant and support our downtown businesses. Unfortunately, I regret going here. I usually reserve 1-star for egregious violations (health and safety and the like), but the ramen here was really just that bad. A couple bowls of ramen and a few appetizers ran us close to $100 and was a near complete waste of $$. The only one who enjoyed their food whatsoever was my toddler. Both my husband and I left hungry and disgruntled. We figured ramen would be good since it literally is in the name of the restaurant. Unfortunately it was absolutely disgusting. Mushy noodles, flavorless salty broth (almost certainly from a powder pack), overcooked disgusting fishy fish--really quite inedible. My souped-up instant ramen at home is 1000% better than this, so for that kind of price for something we could barely stomach was extremely disappointing. Maybe we should have tried the sushi? I don't imagine we'll be back to find out. It's really too bad...but if you can't even pull of instant ramen you really have no business in this industry. I think they've probably gotten away with this due to the lack of dining options available downtown. But come on Fresno! You can do this! Let's get some healthy competition down there!...
