Unfortunately this was the worst ramen I've ever had. I've been to many countries, many cities, lived in New York for many years which is known for all sorts of cuisines but no bowl of noodles I've ever had could compare to how terrible this was. Where do I start? The broths were thick and creamy, like a cream pasta if you will. The first sip, I was hit with a wave of sourness and an awful taste I cannot begin to describe. In ramen, you are supposed to enjoy the broths along with the noodles and even drink it down at the end. I fear this was not possible at all here. They probably added milk or sour cream to thicken the broth which I genuinely don't understand why because it just made it undrinkable. The noodles were overcooked and soggy. There was one singular piece of meat all the way in the bottom of the bowl, which is insane for $16. I have also never seen any ramen place put their meat at the very bottom. Finally, my bowl was missing a significant amount compared to my partner's, although mine was more expensive. He also agreed this was the worst ramen he's ever had. The karaage was stringy and insanely salty. I could not eat it without downing my glass of water. Someone tell the chef that salt does not equal flavor. There was virtually no seasoning on that chicken, just a pound of salt. More than 40 dollars not including tip for one of the worst meals of our lives. At the very least, our server was friendly but in the middle of our meals, the chef came out from the kitchen, sat down a couple of tables away, and started glaring at us like crazy. It was super uncomfortable especially since we were the only table in there. I was so perturbed I quickly asked for takeout containers and the checks so I could leave as soon as possible. Later, I also received a very painful bathroom visit. Never...

Across all of DFW i've not had any better ramen than at Akira - and i might have tried about all of them! This is actually, whole-heartedly Japanese style ramen. It's this specific style and quality it's taken me about ten years to find around here.

The noodles are clearly made fresh, and that's the biggest difference for me. There's a firmness that's satisfying and not stiff - and none of that kinda viscous texture of precooked, re-warmed noodles. I'm honestly amazed how much of a difference that makes but you'll know once you try.

I always get pork shoyu at a new ramen place, that's my favourite, and i think a good way to judge a shop's quality. I'm happy to report the flavour is delightfully calming and relaxing - stopping just short of too hearty, or too salty. There's even just enough smokiness that you can appreciate if you look for it, without being overbearing.

The chashu / pork belly was amazingly soft, like how i've heard the best barbeque described. Not too salty, not overcooked, just great. Even the ajitama / eggs that are almost never what i expect, here they were yet again done to perfection - yolk just barely crystallized in the center, not cold like ice dropped in the broth, but a refreshing accent with that marinated flavour that makes ajitama not just a regular soft-boiled egg.

In short, i'm amazed enough by the quality, freshness, and style of this food (here and their Lewisville location both) that i've felt it necessary to write these paragraphs attempting food journalism, in the hopes that this restaurant is rewarded for their commitment to ramen that really tastes like ramen, and i get to keep coming by with all my friends i want to impress.

Definitely a top tier...

I rarely give reviews, but was looking forward to this newly opened ramen restaurant. It’s really cute inside so again thought it was going to be a good experience. Let me preface this by saying that I am half Japanese, been to Japan many times, and lived in Hawaii for several years. I know what good ramen tastes like. Sadly, this was not. I ordered Pork Shoyu broth ramen (shoyu as you know is soy sauce). It came out looking white and my husband, who ordered the garlic chicken ramen, looked more like shoyu broth than mine. I clarified with the server that she had given me the correct one, and the chef came over and he also confirmed. I had to ask for shoyu (soy sauce) and even adding 3 of the small dishes they brought it in, did not do much to improve the bland flavor. A couple of bamboo shoots, green onions and some small pieces of pork were all that was added. Didn’t even finish it as honestly it was not worth doing so. Very disappointed and certainly not worth the $60 we spent for a late lunch. Hope they can improve a lot, because I hate to see new restaurants close.
