6/27/25 Gritz and Jelly Butter
Both my friend and I were told that Theory was nice for grown folks. What a great time to try it when a band you like is playing there. Yeah so, my friend LOVES Gritz and Jelly Butter! I won't say she is a groupie cause she is more elegant than that but in her glamorous way, she gets us, her friends, to go see the group wherever they play nearby. Last night they were at Theory.
Theory is in a strip mall in Duluth. Because the restaurant sits on the corner there is outdoor seating ( not available last night) Before entry there is security to check to make sure you ain't dangerous to the public! The security man was very nice and he remembered the people as they left, us included. Inside was smaller than I thought but big enough to have a small area for the talent, several booths, 2 bars with seating and tables with seating in between. We got there early so we snagged a seat at the bar with a sight line towards the band. There were folks that came later that weren't so fortunate. Several tables were reserved for parties. Note that online you can pay to reserve. The RSVP (free) does NOT reserve anything, it just let's them know you intend to come.
The DJ....who was that man? My lazy butt should have gotten up and asked him. Let's just say 🔥 🔥 🔥! This is a person you want at your affairs from back yard BBQ to New Year's to the after party after your wedding. He knew all the songs to play and how to transition from one spot to the next. My friend loves "Bad Girls" and she asked him to play it, he did. And she didn't have to wait an half hour for it either! The music was on point. Only 1 tiny suggestion; turn the music down a smidgen so patrons can talk to each other and staff wo shouting Just a smidge
Service...Excellent. Our bartender was kind, patient, and knowledgeable. All the bartenders and servers were hussling!!! I saw no one with the mug face or the face that serves attitude bf you open your mouth. Nope not a one!
Food: Good. I had a grilled chicken sandwich that had cheese, onions and peppers. It came with fries, no substitutions so I had collards on the side. Loved the collards , liked the sandwich and was disappointed with the fries. Too limp for my liking. Almost seemed like they were not freshly made. Overall, the meal was good for a bar. This is to be noted: This kitchen is well run by all outward appearances. The wait time from order placement to receiving food was short. Food was hot. Order was correct.
Drinks: Um, I'm sorry. I dunno. Stopped drinking alcohol. But I saw lots of drinks being made and I heard no complaints. I had a " spritzer". Not on the menu. Special request....juice and club soda.
Dress Don't get it twisted....just because it is in a strip mall don't think of coming in like you're going shopping in one. Theory is trying to keep it classy. Men came casual but women's dress varied from cute casual to dressy, especially if one was celebrating a birthday. Frankly, I like Theory 's dress code. There are other venues for dressing down, like park concerts, some bars and clubs. It's nice to be able to have a place where the grown and classy go.
Overall, I had a great time and would definitely return.
Here is a clip of Gritz and Jelly Butter...enjoy! ( Ignore the man who chose to walk IN FRONT...
Read moreI attended Theory Lounge’s annual NYE celebration. The event included an all you can eat buffet. The only vegetarian options available were fruits, salad, and cheese. For those who eat meat, there was shrimp and chicken available as well. I initially spoke with Milton (a manager at the establishment) and discussed the lack of vegetarian options on the buffet. I informed him the event listing didn’t list what would be on the menu, and I informed him that I called the restaurant repeatedly days prior to the event (with no avail) to see what was on the buffet. I asked Milton if there was any way the restaurant could accommodate me with a hot vegetarian item, since I could not eat the chicken or shrimp. Milton refused, and I informed him it was not fair considering the circumstances. He continued to inform me I’d have to pay extra if I wanted a vegetarian item. When I protested, he asked me, “Why do you stay. Why don’t you just leave?” I had no issue with him not granting my request, but the lack of professionalism in his response was unacceptable. I asked to speak with the owner. The owner refused to accommodate me as well and went on to tell me it’s her buffet and she puts on it what she wants and no one had ever asked for a vegetarian option in her 8 years of hosting the NYE event. I don’t know if this is true but much has changed in the last 8 years. There is always room for improvement and growth. I refuse to ever attend this event again, but it would only benefit them to expand their buffet and make it more inclusive, or at least have the buffet items listed in the event details, as there are people with all kinds of dietary restrictions (e.g. peanut allergies, shellfish allergies, etc). Showing you care about ALL your customers...
Read moreMe and my girls came to Theory for a nice girls night out. I have come here plenty times before and always have a good time. However , this visit fell very short of expectations. Not sure if there has been and owner or mgmt change but customer service is noticeably lacking. The staff's attitude and demeanor are unfriendly. We asked for a glass of water as we saw other people in the lounge with water. And we were told very rudely because we are sitting at the bar we will have to buy a glass of water. We were first seated at the a table and moved to the bar. If we knew the level of customer service would be different from the bar then the table we would have stayed. I have never been told that you have to pay for tap water at any restaurant or bar. Yes we asked for water not bottle water. We had several other concerns and asked to speak to the mgr and was told we couldn’t. Stay away from this place. It’s the worst in regards to customer service. The bartender name was Kim. Kim definitely needs some retraining and customer service skills. She didn’t know the difference from top shelf liquor and non top shelf. She didn’t know the difference between tequila and vodka. Also she was not aware of the top shelf tequila that was available. She said the top shelf tequila that was available was grey goose and Patron. When you go out to a bar you expect the bartender to be knowledgeable of the different types of...
