Visited for lunch and was quickly greeted very nicely. Sat at the bar and promptly served beverages. A very nice beginning, all under 5 minutes. Wonderful! The menu orders from behind the sushi bar consisting of some nigiri and a couple of rolls arrived as fast as the chef could make them, which was great. The fish was fresh. The portions were a little on the smaller side for some of the nigiri (not all), and this was ok becuase the fish I had was very good, fresh, and the right texture indicating higher quality and superb taste. The Saba was well portioned. The rice was balanced, not overly seasoned and not bland. It had a good temperature and just the right amount of sweetness to vinegar. Making good rice is harder than it sounds, and many places ruin sushi by making bad rice. (Pay attention Trapper's Sushi, you need help in that department)
SIDE NOTE: During the time I was waiting after finishing my miso soup.... I ended up having a low and started to fade, my glucose levels were going down fast. I waved politely to the server and asked for some soda, two servers worked together to get it to me and they kept checking on me. I was embarrassed, but to see them care so much restored my faith in human nature. They were kind and hospitable.
The sushi chefs made good sushi, presented well, but without all the zig-zagging, over-sauced rolls. They kept it simple with subtle garnishes. To me, they allowed the quality to help speak for itself, which to me, it certainly did. The chefs that served me were experienced older men who appeared to enjoy their craft.
The prices were not too expensive, and the value was quite fair. I look forward to going again, this time more prepared...
Read moreNot the place for a sushi bar but they have one for some reason. They do have excellent sushi with average prices. It was clean and roomy. It has several nice 4-6 person booths and 3-4 tables that could be combined for one large group. It also has an eight person sushi bar and this is where my problem begins. Our favorite, sushi place, Chef Tak retired and closed a while back. This was my wife's birthday and, while we were alone, we were looking forward to our typical fun experience bantering with the chefs, discussing the specials and a little fellow-shipping with other patrons. This "sushi bar experience" is why many connoisseur's choose to eat in. We entered and asked to be seated at the bar. We hoped we could have some fun talking and watching the process. We got back a tilted head and "Wouldn't you like a table?" We responded that we would prefer the bar. Then he says, "We do have a couple of spots open I guess" then he said, "we have that booth over there." The whole bar was empty and clean with set-ups at this point. Now a little irritated, we told him that if we couldn't sit at the bar that was fine. We would go elsewhere. To shorten this up...You sit too low at the bar to see the prep. The chefs give a quick hello and then a Thank-you at the end and offer nothing in between. You order through the waiter and never interact with any of the four chefs except once I tried just to verify it wasn't a language issue. I got a short reply and that was it. They should just tear out the bar and put the kitchen in back. Again though, the sushi itself was excellent. We just don't go to sushi eat in a booth. Part of it is the experience and Domo...
Read moreThe food was okay, mediocre at best. I gave service a 2 only because the waitress wasn’t outgoing or friendly at all. I wanted to know if they had the Toro and he or she didn’t have any kind of expression and looked really upset as if he or she didn’t want to be there. There was no greeting from this waitress, he or she walked me to my table, pointed to the table, and walked away. Came back with my water and left without asking was I ready to order. I had to call him or her back to let him or her know I was ready. It was a very weird situation. At the end, I wanted desert but he or she just dropped the check off and walked away. I watched if he or she treated the other customers the same and he or she did. I ended up leaving. I hope that person has better days ahead. The host at the front door however, was nice. I will not be returning to this sushi restaurant. If you want great service check out The koi restaurant in Tacoma. Great food, great service, and wonderful atmosphere. I only used he or she because I couldn’t tell what he or she was. He or she didn’t introduce himself or herself so I had no idea, sorry. Looked like a guy but could have been a women. In that line of business a smile and greeting go a long way. Just remember, treat people how you want...
