Donuts makes me happy! And I was excited to hear about this new donut shop that opened in Gig Harbor!
After weeks of drooling over people's posts on yelp and their instagram stories, I wanted to make a trip down to taste their donuts.
I'm not too familiar with Gig Harbor, but the shop is located on a nice location with a few other shops and near a Safeway. There's lots of parking and you don't feel crowded like you are in Seattle.
I love the interior of the shop. The size is just right for a grab and go place so there are no tables to eat at. I love how they display their donuts. They have backdrops which are great for photos. The shop is simple and modern.
They specialize in raised donuts and also have mochi donuts. Sadly they were out of mochi donuts that day we went. But that's okay because it was still worth the drive. Their staff were welcoming and very friendly, which is important to me. We even got to meet the owner, which was great!
Oh! And onto the important part, the donuts. To be honest, raised donuts are not my favorite and so are apple fritters. I guess it's because I've tried them before from other places here and in Hawaii (cause I'm from there), and I wasn't a fan. I love cake donuts especially with sprinkles. Well, we ordered maple bacon, lemon pistachio, matcha oreo, apple fritter, and they had chocolate with SPRINKLES! Yessss!
BUT I have to say, after taking one bite of their raised donuts, it was pretty damn awesome!!! It's so light, soft and the flavors are great. I also took a bite of the apple fritter. Okay, I took more than a bite, I ate the whole thing! It was amazing! Way different from the others that I had. Texture was better and you can taste the cinnamon. Mmmmmm.
I hope this review was helpful. I have friends who are donut hunters and I hope they make the journey down to try it. It's really good and worth the drive!
Thank...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is an average donut shop. I think they try to stand out with their mochi donut, but fail to stand out in any form.
Their dough on their standard donuts is very fluffy which is nice, but the outside failed to have that fried aspect. The flavor of the dough itself was nothing spectacular. In my opinion, the dough had no flavor. Much like a store bought brioche bun.
Their mochi dough is made really well. This would be the only reason I return. The mochi dough has a chewier consistency (hence, the term mochi), but as with their regular raised donuts, there's not flavor.
Where their flavor does come from are their glazes. On the day we went, we purchased horchata (which tasted more like cinnamon toast crunch), watermelon, maple bacon, oreo, fruit pebbles, raspberry and apple fritters. All of their glazes were delicious.
In my opinion, I have a feeling that most of their business comes from social media, and they try to be unique, but their flavors are nothing out there (by now, everyone has copied VooDoos maple bacon bar). Originality isn't a big factor for me.
The main reason behind my score is the price. Almost 3 dollars for a donut is too high for my liking. We're not in Chicago or New York City.
If you want some good donuts, save yourself the money at head over to the other side of the bridge (even with the toll price, you'd be paying less) and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDon't think I ever planned a vacation around food before. Found out about this place from a FB Southern Idaho Foodies page. Even though I am Japanese, I had never heard of mochi donuts. Well, my curiosity was peaked and since I had a layover in Seattle, I decided to stay in Gig Harbor overnight (another 1st) and check this place out. So glad I did.
I got the mochi sugar, glazed, caramel and chocolate donuts. Told the gal out front, that I came all the way from Idaho for these donuts. She was so nice to put them in a box and gave me extra individual bags so I could pack them up in my suitcase - and yes, they survived the trip home. The owner, Sun, came out and upon learning about my situation, he made a blueberry mochi donut for me. Got a large coffee to go and I was all set. The coffee (Olympia Coffee) was outstanding and another big plus.
Sun said he had the shop for a year and a half, so that meant his shop was relatively new when covid hit. So, glad he is doing well. I loved the Gig Harbor area and if I was a younger lass, I would consider moving there. But, this old gal only has so many moves left in her so I'll have to settle for another vacation. After telling my brother and sister-in-law about my time there - they are ready to go back with me.
Wish we had mochi donuts near Meridian, ID, but alas - no. So, will have to settle for mochi donuts...
