85C Bakery Café was only a block or so from our hotel in Glendale so we found ourselves there for breakfast most mornings during our Christmas visit to Los Angeles. Our daughter and son-in-law would come to the hotel and we’d walk to 85C. 85C is a true bakery with counter service and just a few seats. We were lucky enough each of the 5-6 days we went to grab the 4 only ‘real’ upholstered chairs in the bakery, otherwise there were a few stools/counters. You can expect a line most times, but it moves fairly quickly. My family enjoyed their taro bread, cheese pies, chocolate croissants, ham and cheese bun, and potato cheese pastry while I found the Chocolate chip bowl, brioche, mangotale and cream cheese danish I ordered to be processed looking and pretty much tasting like something from a box at the grocery store, not like items from a specialty bakery. As for beverages, I had two types of smoothies and my son had one - strawberry/banana and mango/peach. Here 85C shines! Both were excellent, and, though pricey, were fairly large and satisfying. My husband fell in love with the grapefruit tea, which he ordered every day. He likes unsweetened tea, so the grapefruit only added a bit of taste without that sweetness. I tried it and it wasn’t my ‘cup of tea’😉, but very unique and cool. The coffee was excellent though expensive. I think most people will find 85C offers enough variety that there is something for everyone, though it may take a few tries to determine exactly what...
Read moreOne of many chain locations, 85 Degree Bakery Cafe here in Glendale competes with a bigger local favorite just a few hundred feet away. This is a good alternative if the lines of said competition are too long.
The style is light, airy, and not overly sweet for their pastry items. Cakes and other dessert items are also lighter in structure and you won't find many heavy creams here.
Drink items are your Asian teas and modern boba milk tea concoctions. There is coffee, but it really isn't good coffee. Additional flavors and additions are a bit chemically.
But I do love some of their buns and individually portioned desserts. The Red Bean Buns, Ham and Cheese, Milk Buns, and bread are excellent. There are two types of Asian Egg Tarts one drawing some Portuguese styles. The selections can be overwhelming at first, but soon you'll find a favorite or two if you explore. The pricing isn't gourmet and its affordability is what keeps folks coming.
Street parking is relatively convenient on the west side of Brand Blvd. There is public parking and do...
Read moreI’m going with the few that thinks this place is overrated.! I visited twice. Once and it was too crowded to wait for me. I read the ingredients in the bottled drink in the cold section. They looked great but didn’t read to me as being simple ingredients I could pronounce; That means it’s a no go. Second time I went I tried single collections of plastic wrapped on display pastries. And Some specialty slice in the display the people had to take out. Mango, chocolate, etc.. I give an extra star for presentation. Because everything looks delicious. However everything, and I mean everything was woefully dry. Like how Panaderia Mexican bakery’s everything is very dry. And people have a taste for that. I don’t, I like my baked goods to be moist. I’m sure I could find some drink or pastry there that I liked. But I bought like 8 items an meh 🫤. If I go to a panaderia I get bread pudding if they have it lol. I need something like that moist. So I guess I’ll stick to occasionally going to Porto’s. They usually have a good variety that...
