My wife and I have gotten food here twice and been pleased both times. In terms of value for money, this place is excellent at providing classic American comfort food.
The following is written as suggestions to the head chef based on the dishes we have specifically ordered that we believe could use minor improvements. To be clear to others reading this, we would order these again, they are not bad dishes, we simply believe that small tweaks could improve the dishes.
We ordered a Philly Cheese steak grinder on one occasion. The portions were good, flavors balanced, and seasoning was good too, but the beef had not sat on the flat top long enough to brown. Without a maillard reaction occuring on the shaved beef, you are missing added crispy texture, and additional flavor compounds that come from proper browning.
We ordered a Diablo calzone on another occasion. Portion was enormous, the flavors were well balanced, and the red sauce was surprisingly delicious, way better than most sauces that come with calzones at most places. However, we felt that the calzone was over seasoned. The chicken was also overcooked to the point of changing the texture, but given how small it was diced, it was not a significant impediment to the eating experience. By easing up on the salt, it should improve the taste. You may also want to consider how you prep the chicken prior to putting it in the calzone to ensure it...
Read moreI am a transplant from NJ where in my former area there are literally hundreds of truly fine restaurants if you include NYC. Since moving to Eastern Ct some time ago I have been whining about the relative lack of really fine authentic food. Comparisons are odious I suppose but missing the opportunity to really "dine" has been one of the downsides of my relocation. Last night we discovered "The Verona" in Granby about 45 minutes from our home. We found it to be truly exceptional in every respect. I had Chicken Francaise, one of my favorite standard Italian dishes. It was absolutely perfect. It came with a nice salad, wonderful bread baked by the chef on premises and pasta with a red sauce the was infused with sweet basil and of course made with San Marzano tomatoes. You choose your own pasta made to order.
I guess I sound like a shill because I am so impressed with Chef Mario and the staff. I assure you that I have never met these folks nor do I have any connection with their business. I am just an old guy in his eighties who loves to cook. I have dined in many places in the world and I assure you that this modest restaurant in a shopping center in Granby is worth driving a long distance. Also the music was soft and pleasant and the place was spotless. All this for what I think was about $23.00. I can't...
Read moreWe've ordered many times and there have been many mistakes. I chalked it up to just needing to understand how to order modifications so they show up on their slips better to make it fool proof. Nope. I've ordered the same thing with the same modifications and it was wrong in different ways each time. I tried calling to order rather than online to make sure that someone understood the modification I was asking for, still wrong. I just order it without dressing or modifications to prevent any issues and go to the grocery store and buy a bag of lettuce to replace the spring mix with. It's ridiculous, but it's currently my only solution if everyone wants to order from here. Otherwise, the pizza is pretty good, especially the chicken bacon ranch, which is usually either dry or way too sloppy from other places and this place seems to do it well. I wish they did a red...
