The Experience:
We had walked by this place a few times during our stay in San Juan Puerto Rico and read many positive review on google so we decided to try it. We were greeted by Jose, the owner and sat outside at a table of our choosing.
As we looked over the menu we spoke with the owner about some of the items on the menu as well as the overall idea behind this concept. He told us that their goal was to open up a space that was unlike any other In town with an emphasis on food quality, execution and attention to detail.
Our drinks were served and items atarted coming from the kitchen. The star of the show was the food. Where to start.... The quesadilla dish not only was plated well but the flavor was excellent and the fresh pico was amazing. The Guacamole is cubed and served at room temp with a fresh sprinkling of queso fresco. The salsas are unique to each dish as as anyone who has been to Latin restaurants will tell you... alot of the times this is not the case.. They build these flavor profiles separately and each stands alone as its own unique dish which makes this place place different.
The Lechón tacos hands down were the best representation of this type of dish I have ever had. The freshness of the ingredients is one thing but the silky smooth finish of the pork... WOW... My big complaint about this dish at the places I have been is that the pork gets dry with a sandy type finish. Not here. This was fresh, suculant and just melted in your mouth with each bite.. when you add the extra flavor texture of the salsa to this its a home run.
The fricasé taco was very good also and hit your with a completely different flavor profile. Very interesting choices here and it makes for an amazing culinary experience.
The empanadillas were simply some of the best we have ever tried. The delicate flake like texture of the outer crust gives way to a soft and chewy inside where the lechón and melted cheese is there to meet you. I can not describe how good this is... just made for a perfect flavor explosion.
The White Chocolate pudding was the best dessert in this category we have ever had. It's just the closest thing to cooking perfection as you can get. The soft, chewy inside is encased in a perfect crust that is not overdone. The creme that they use here is a perfect partner to this dish. What a great way to end the meal.
Overall Impressions:
They are here to prove that you can be unique in this space which is difficult but not impossible. Everything we had here was different than anything we have had at other Latin restaurants so as long as they continue this level of execution the people will come.. they are going to be successful. Their food preparation and quality are already at a very high level. They are meeting the moment and a few small things aside this is as close to culinary perfection as one can get. As a resprentation of several parts of Latin America I would say they know their food and their menu reflects this so there is something here for everyone. Thank you to the owner Jose and his staff for taking the time to talk with us. We wish you nothing but continued...
Read moreEl Taller Tacos de Diseño successfully married the Mexican cuisine technic with Puerto Rican flavors. It reminds me to the fusion of Mexican cuisine and Korean BBQ that became so popular in the United States a couple of years ago.
I tried three of the tacos, all of them excellent, but my favorite was the short ribs taco. The sides are also great. The cheese balls are amazing. They have an unexpected texture and they pack tons of flavor. However, the empanadas are in a class of their own. The homemade crust is light and flavorful, and it packs an impossible amount of meat.
El Taller Tacos de Diseño is a most stop if you are...
Read moreIt took over 40 minutes to prepare two simple meals and the place wasn’t full. When food arrived, they warned me they ran out of beans, after the wait I just asked for refried beans instead. They brought me the original beans that were supposed to come, but with Bacon (I’m vegan and asked for a meatless meal and they confirmed that the beans had no meat on it). They brought the refried beans after and charged me for that.
Overall, took too long, order came missing items and they charged me to replace it even without previous warning, I’m not coming back and don’t...
