The Stables — Restaurant in Hadley

We live in northern Connecticut but make it up to Western mass at least a couple of times a month. Stables is our favorite restaurant for breakfast. Not only is the food great but it is more reasonably priced than some other restaurants in the Northampton area Today we drove into the parking lot at quarter of 2 and I knew that the restaurant closed at 2:00 p.m. I was worried that we were too late for breakfast but the waitress graciously seated us and took our order. Even though they were about to close the doors we were not rushed at any time and enjoyed eating our breakfast at a normal leisurely pace. They have taken all the appropriate Covid 19 precautions including plexiglass dividers, Rigorous table and bathroom cleaning and even a contact list that you sign so that customers can be traced should a positive case of Covid 19 be discovered. Everything that we ordered was great. The bacon was just right - thick and crispy, the sausage was cooked perfectly as well. We had a generous portion of home fries and ended up having to leave some on the plate as we got so full. Our waitress checked on us often to see how the food was and to refill our coffee. Believe it or not the most favorite part of the meal for us is the homemade oatmeal molasses toast. We ended up buying a loaf as well to bring home so we can have fond memories of our visit today. The good: friendly service, fluffy pancakes with real fruit, buttery homemade biscuits, a small business The not-so-good: the gravy on the biscuits and gravy is not homemade nor remotely an authentic recipe. I'm certain this comes in a big tub sold in bulk, I could taste the preservatives. It reminded me of what we were served in our high school cafeteria in the 1990s. If you search for any recipe online or in a cookbook for biscuits and gravy gravy, it is not this. What they served on top of the biscuits was a kind of alfredo cheese/creamy sauce with very small pieces of sausage in it. That was a big disappoint as I was at Stable's specifically because I had a craving for biscuits and gravy! Gravy is supposed to taste sausagey, peppery, buttery, and creamy. The gravy did not have any sausage or peppery flavor. I was surprised, even fast food-style chains like Biscuit World, Bob Evan's or Cracker Barrel get the gravy right. This was the worst breakfast that I have ever had at a restaurant. We were sat at a table that had napkins and silverware already out. The napkin under one set of silverware had clearly been used which was extremely off-putting to start. My daughter ordered two poached eggs which came out completely cooked through like hardboiled eggs and were served in about a cup of water. I ordered a hash omelette and my husband ordered the Irish Benedict. Both of us barely touched our food. My husbands benedict also had hard cooked eggs and both of our meals had hash that was very off. My food had atleast 3 long hairs found on it (they were clearly none of ours). I thought their catch phrase (lousy food, shaky service, and cold coffee) was a joke but really they just seem to be getting ahead of the accurate criticisms.
